As Ikenna battles both physical threats and Mareen's systematic racism and sexism, she's forced to reconsider where her loyalties lie, especially as war with the feared Blood-Emperor of Accacia looms. Glimpses of broader worldbuilding hint at the story's scope and set things up for the next installment, but may leave readers frustrated by the lack of answers. Still, this invigorating debut marks Davenport as a writer to watch.

N.E. Davenport’s world-building in The Blood Trials is LEGENDARY.
Exhaustive
While I love the idea and premise of this novel, the author developed a world and story that seem to be in my opinion, too detailed. Explanations that could’ve been two or three sentences went on four pages. I finished because I’m a black woman and I enjoyed reading a story that expound it on prejudice in such a open way, in a fantasy world. Nevertheless, this book was exhausting to read.
