Publisher Description
Midwife Sarah Malloy and her private investigator husband, Frank, must stop a killer lurking among a young family in the newest installment of the USA Today bestselling Gaslight Mysteries.
Hugh Breedlove is far from the most agreeable client private investigator Frank Malloy has ever had, but his case is impossible to refuse: his young niece, Julia, has been wrongfully committed to an insane asylum by her cruel and unfaithful husband, Chet Longly. Though Breedlove and his wife seem more interested in protecting the family reputation than their niece’s safety, Frank and Sarah agree to help for the sake of Julia and the young son she left behind.
Frank and Sarah’s investigation reveals a dark secret—a maid at the Longly home died suspiciously under Chet’s watch, and now it seems Julia’s son might also be in danger. The Malloys fear they are dealing with a man more dangerous than they had anticipated, one who will do anything to defame his wife. But all is not as it seems in the Longly family, and perhaps another monster is hiding in plain sight....
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In Thompson's strong 26th Gaslight mystery set in turn-of-the-20th-century New York City (after 2022's Murder on Madison Square), investment banker Hugh Breedlove consults Frank Malloy, an ex-cop who still works as a PI despite coming into a fortune, and his capable wife, Sarah, a midwife, because he's concerned about his teenage daughter, Ruth. Julia, Ruth's cousin and Hugh's niece, has been committed to an asylum by Julia's husband, Chet Longly, whom she was forced to marry by her parents. Hugh regards Chet as a libertine, and doubts that Julia has any mental illness, but fears that her status as an involuntary patient will cast a pall on Ruth's reputation. Despite Hugh's self-serving motives, Frank takes the case, and Sarah joins him in interviewing Julia at the Manhattan State Hospital on Ward's Island. They emerge convinced of her sanity, and their inquiry into Chet leads them to probe a maid's suspicious death at the Longly residence. The unexplained disappearance of one of his servants raises the stakes. The loving relationship between Frank and Sarah bolsters the clever plot. This long-running series shows no sign of losing steam.

Wonderful
Sarah and Frank Malloy are caught up in a most confusing and difficult situation. Frank is hired by a man who wishes to have his niece released from the psychiatric hospital she was placed in by her husband. While the two take up the case the evidence keeps pointing towards a different conclusion than she is innocent and wrongly held. Bribes and old money afraid of scandal help get her out but that’s when the danger truly begins. Now the Malloys know the truth but is there anything they can do to help?
Another exciting story in this much beloved series. I always eagerly await the arrival of the newest book, devour it quickly and then am sorely disappointed that I must wait for a new one again. I am always amazed at the world of Sarah and Frank Malloy that we get to visit and see how different NYC was and how some things never change. What is always true is that when you pick up a book in this series you are never disappointed!
Over 3/4 of book before a detective figured it out?
I have always enjoyed these books, but sorry this book was not as enjoyable because the fact that Julia was insane and no one knew was dragged out way to long. We have to remember the detective should have figured it out, I did after only 30 pages.
