SUNTORY HALL

Inaugurated in 1986, Suntory Hall was intended to feature some of the finest acoustics in the world. One of the key structural features is the use of a vineyard style of seating, where the audience is arranged around the stage. It was an idea that the conductor Herbert von Karajan once recommended to Keizo Saji, the then-president of Suntory, and allows the audience to feel at one with the performers and to enjoy a more immersive musical experience. In 1999, Suntory Hall began hosting regular concerts by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then, visiting conductors have included Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Simon Rattle, Christian Thielemann, Zubin Mehta, Christoph Eschenbach, Gustavo Dudamel, and Franz Welser-Möst. World-class soloists such as Mitsuko Uchida, Midori Goto, and Anne-Sophie Mutter also regularly give recitals. The hall has also attracted attention for its Summer Festival, a contemporary music festival that has taken place since 1987, as well as the Chamber Music Garden, a chamber music festival that began in 2011. Here, you can enjoy numerous exclusive playlists, recordings of past performances at Suntory Hall as well as works by associated artists.
