The 20 Year Mix

The 20 Year Mix

The 20 Year Mix gathers the best tracks from this San Diego quartet’s first two albums, giving evidence to the members' collective faith, energy, and style. The band’s songs are muscular and melodic, comparable to the work of secular acts like Poison and Ratt and Christian artists like Petra and White Heart. Lead vocalist Adam Lee Kemp has the pipes of a born arena rocker, easily shifting from the midrange strut of “Stick to Your Guns” to the Freddie Mercury–esque heights of “Paradise.” Lead guitarist Tony Lopez is likewise versatile, giving “Snakes in the Grass” crunchy riffage and bringing hard rock menace to “Break Down the Walls.” Crystavox is particularly good at balancing the conventions of ‘80s-style pop/metal with a sincere God-centered message. Whether the band is delivering a rousing anthem like “It’s All Right (to Rock-N-Roll),” tossing off tough but tuneful numbers like “Sacrifice,” or offering a delicately rendered acoustic ballad like “Home Again,” it hews close to its rock-solid faith. Twenty years on, Crystavox’s music still rocks righteously.
