Unscripted: KINSHIP is a three-part podcast series exploring themes of interdependence, care and kinship in the arts. Each episode, hosted by artist and theatre creator Angela Sun, welcomes a different artistic collective to engage in conversation about how they are reimagining artistic collaboration in ways that embrace these themes as well as how relationships and radical reciprocity have been integral to the development of their collective’s unique creative processes. Episodes were released in June 2022 and included conversations with three guest artist collectives: The Countdown Public Art Project, The Switch Collective, and Bricks & Glitter.

    Episode 3: Bricks and Glitter

    In the third and final episode of Unscripted: KINSHIP, Angela is joined by three members of Bricks and Glitter. Bricks and Glitter is a community arts festival, celebrating Two-Spirit, trans and queer talent, ingenuity, caring, anger, and abundance. In this episode they discuss the essential nature of care and accessibility in their work, the importance of radical honesty and accountability in order to divest art from capitalism and move instead towards liberation, and what they hope their impact as artists can be for current well as future generations of QTBIPOC community in Toronto.

    Episode 2: The Switch Collective

    Episode 2: The Switch Collective

    In this episode of Unscripted: KINSHIP, Angela is joined by four members of the Switch Collective. Switch is an interdisciplinary performance group that has been co-creating new methodologies and political performance materials for the public sphere since 2016. Switch centres the unique knowledge systems and artistic expressions of Queer & Trans, Black, Indigenous and Peoples of Color (QTBIPOC). Switch is pushing boundaries by blending mediums, bringing them into unexpected public spaces, and reaching everyday people, thus attempting to reject the elitism wherein art is relegated to galleries and theatres. In this episode, they talk about the role of consent in street-based performance art, their mutual aid efforts as artists working and relationship-building in Parkdale, and the fine balance between urgency, care, and political art.

    Episode 1: The Countdown Public Art Project

    Episode 1: The Countdown Public Art Project

    In this inaugural episode of Unscripted: KINSHIP, host Angela Sun is joined by four members of the Countdown Public Art Project. “Countdown” is an Ontario-wide arts initiative that works with communities to create pebble mosaic monuments in public spaces to honour those affected by gender-based violence and to imagine, or count down to, a world without gender-based violence. In this episode, the Countdown artists discuss the value of trust and relationship building within community arts, Indigenous teachings on the storykeeping nature of stones, as well as the unique challenges faced by survivors, and the people who work to support them, living in rural areas.
