The most notable thing about Dylan Sinclair’s follow-up to 2020’s JUNO-nominated Proverb isn’t its sense of melody (pretty) or atmosphere (rich), but its confidence: The Toronto R&B artist sings like he was born to do it—and takes his time doing it. Trends are honored (the Frank Ocean-esque haze of “Rational” and “Too Soon?”), but they’re bucked, too: Listen to “Lifetime” and “If You Feel Like Leaving Me,” whose neat orchestral arrangements offer sharp counterpoint to moments that are otherwise dreamy and impressionistic. That he grew up in the church and professes to have what he calls a lock with God makes sense—more than the trace gospel influence, he sounds like someone following his own path.
