Greenhorn on the Frontier

Driven by land hunger and a love of freedom, Harry Warrilow and his sister Sukey struggled across the rugged Alleghenies dragging all their worldly possessions in a handcart. But the frontier settlement of Pittsburgh was not their final destination. They pushed on through the mountains and woods to the north to hue and carve a farm out of the stern Pennsylvania wilderness to make the first real home either of them had ever known. Difficult and dangerous as it was, the trek across Pennsylvania was the least of what they would face in the months to come—cruel weather, back-breaking work, brutal and grasping enemies, loneliness in the isolated cabin, sickness and the strange politics of pre-revolutionary Pennsylvania and Virginia, which called even the deed to their hard won home into question.

Life in the colonies is brought to life, including the relations with the Delaware and Shawnee tribes, and a very frank understanding of slavery, the author deals with the key issues of the Revolutionary War era. As in her earlier novels, Ann Finlayson has created a fast-moving tale filled with vivid characters and exciting incidents and at the same time has captured the rare flavor of early America.
