Ep. 235 - Overcoming Limits As Parents | Jessica Hurlbut and Bryan Ward

Ep. 235 - Overcoming Limits As Parents | Jessica Hurlbut and Bryan Ward

Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I’m excited to share this new episode with you.

Jessica Hurlbut is a wife, pastor, writer, podcaster, and mom of five—two autistic, two adopted, and one typical teen boy.

She and her husband, Greg, are lead pastors of New Testament Church in Upstate New York, and oversee a network of churches in the North Country.

Jessica and her husband also host a weekly podcast, Full Spectrum Parent, the only faith-based autism parenting podcast.

We all know it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and limited by the demands on your life as a parent.

But what if the limits on your life could be overcome through the power of the Holy Spirit?

Jessica shares stories of her own limited life as a mom of five in her new book Unlimited Motherhood.

Jessica Hurlbut ignites hope in the hearts of overwhelmed moms to believe that God has more.

Revealing 12 limits that hinder mothers--very real things like exhaustion, distractions, and disillusionment--Jessica empowers you to respond in obedience rather than react in emotions.

No matter your circumstances, God sees you, knows you, and has more for your life--even amid the crazy season of parenthood.

You can check out her story on her website in the show notes below. You can also order her book in the links on the show notes or below.

Ep. 234 - Parenting Pep Talk - Parenting With Positive Discipline | Bryan Ward

Ep. 234 - Parenting Pep Talk - Parenting With Positive Discipline | Bryan Ward

Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I’m excited to share this new episode of Parenting Pep Talk!

I want to dive into the concept of positive discipline and how it can benefit both parents and children.

As parents, we strive to raise confident, compassionate, and well-behaved children.

But sometimes, traditional discipline methods can leave us feeling frustrated, disconnected, and unsure if we're truly helping our children grow.

That's where positive discipline comes in and in this episode I dive into some basic principles you can incorporate into your parenting journey to help with positive discipline.

Positive discipline is a transformative approach to parenting that focuses on teaching rather than punishing.

It empowers children by fostering self-discipline, problem-solving skills, and healthy relationships.

This method involves setting clear expectations, using consistent consequences, and effective communication.

By allowing children to experience the natural or logical consequences of their actions, they learn responsibility and gain valuable life skills.

Positive discipline strikes a balance between setting boundaries and allowing children to grow and learn.

It is a journey of personal growth for both parents and children, creating strong connections and emotional intelligence.

Thank you for joining me today, and remember, embracing positive discipline can truly transform our parenting journey.

Please make sure you are subscribed to my show! Also, please leave me a rating and review. I would appreciate your feedback,

Ep. 232 - Parenting Pep Talk - Teaching Accountability & Responsibility To Our Children | Bryan Ward

Ep. 232 - Parenting Pep Talk - Teaching Accountability & Responsibility To Our Children | Bryan Ward

    NEW EPISODE RELEASED
Click the links below or in my bio.

Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I’m excited to share this new episode of Parenting Pep Talk!

Today, I want to talk to you about an important topic that we sometimes overlook – teaching accountability to our kids.

It's not always easy, but it's incredibly important, especially when it comes to our kids.

    Let me explain why.

Our kids look up to us, and they learn from our behavior more than we realize.

When we own our mistakes, we teach them a valuable lesson about accountability and integrity.

By admitting our mistakes, we show our children that it's okay to make them too.

We create an environment where they feel safe to take risks, learn, and grow.

Owning our mistakes also helps build trust and strong relationships with our kids.

They see that we're not perfect, but we're willing to learn and improve.

So, how can we effectively own our mistakes and set a positive example for our children? Here are a few tips:

    1. Acknowledge the mistake: Be honest with yourself and your child about what went wrong. Admitting our faults is the first step towards growth.

    2. Learn from it: Discuss with your child what you've learned from the mistake and how you plan to avoid it in the future. This demonstrates the importance of learning from our failures.

    3. Move forward: Show your child that mistakes don't define us. Emphasize the importance of resilience and perseverance in overcoming challenges.

When our children witness us owning our mistakes, it empowers them to do the same.

They learn that making mistakes is a natural part of life and that it's okay to ask for forgiveness.

It also strengthens the bond between parent and child, creating an open and honest relationship based on trust and understanding.

So, let's remember, fellow parents, that owning our mistakes is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength.

By showing our children that it's okay to be imperfect, we equip them with the tools they need to navigate through life's challenges.

Own your mistakes, be a role model, and watch your children thrive.

Please make sure you check out my links in my bio.

Ep. 230 - Parenting Pep Talk: Positive Reinforcement | Bryan Ward

Ep. 230 - Parenting Pep Talk: Positive Reinforcement | Bryan Ward

Today, we will be discussing a topic that is both easy to understand and implement in everyday parenting: the power of positive reinforcement.

Positive reinforcement is a simple yet effective technique that can have a significant impact on your child's behavior and overall development.

Join me as I explore how this approach can make parenting a little bit easier and more enjoyable.

    Segment 1: Understanding Positive Reinforcement

    - Definition: Positive reinforcement involves acknowledging and rewarding desirable behaviors to encourage their repetition.

    - How it works: By focusing on the positive, parents can create a nurturing environment that enhances their child's motivation, self-esteem, and overall well-being.

    - Examples of positive reinforcement: Verbal praise, hugs, high-fives, small rewards, and privileges can all serve as effective forms of positive reinforcement.

Segment 2: Benefits of Positive Reinforcement

    - Building a strong parent-child bond: Positive reinforcement helps foster a positive connection between parents and children, creating a foundation of trust and open communication.

    - Encouraging desired behaviors: By acknowledging and rewarding positive behaviors, parents can motivate their children to continue exhibiting those behaviors.

    - Boosting self-esteem and confidence: Positive reinforcement helps children develop a positive self-image and belief in their abilities, leading to increased confidence and resilience.

Segment 3: Practical Tips for Implementing Positive Reinforcement

    - Be specific and timely: Offer specific praise and rewards immediately after your child displays the desired behavior.

    - Consistency is key: Maintain a consistent approach to positive reinforcement to establish clear expectations and help your child understand what behaviors are valued.

    - Use a variety of rewards: Tailor rewards to your child's interests and preferences, considering both tangible rewards (stickers, small treats) and intangible rewards (extra playtime, a special activity).

Segment 4: Overcoming Challenges and Potential Pitfalls

    - Avoid over-rewarding: Balance is crucial to prevent children from becoming overly reliant on external rewards and losing intrinsic motivation.

    - Addressing unwanted behaviors: Focus on redirecting and teaching alternative behaviors rather than solely using punishment or negative reinforcement.

    - Adjusting strategies as your child grows: As your child matures, their motivations and interests may change. Adapt your positive reinforcement techniques accordingly.

Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool that can transform the parenting experience.

By focusing on the positive, acknowledging and rewarding desired behaviors, we can create an environment that fosters growth, confidence, and a strong parent-child bond.

Remember, parenting is a journey, and incorporating positive reinforcement can make that journey a little easier and more rewarding for both you and your child.

Thanks for tuning in to today's episode, and we look forward to sharing more valuable insights with you in our future episodes.
