Description

To mark the centenary of the poem, Faber is releasing the award-winning The Waste Land app for the first time on iPhone as well as iPad.

The Waste Land brings alive the most revolutionary poem of the last hundred years for a 21st Century audience. A wealth of interactive features illuminate T. S. Eliot's greatest work.

This digital edition carefully respects the typography and integrity of the original yet offers spectacular new ways to explore the significance and influence of the poem.

• watch a remarkable specially filmed performance of the entire poem by Fiona Shaw, synchronised to the text
• listen to complete audio readings of the poem, also synchronised to the text, by T. S. Eliot himself (readings from two periods in his life) as well as Ted Hughes, Alec Guinness, Viggo Mortensen and Jeremy Irons with Eileen Atkins
• understand the poem’s many references and allusions with the help of comprehensive interactive notes
• reveal the structure of the verse and move quickly between sections with a new navigation tool
• watch over 35 expert video perspectives on the poem including contributions from Seamus Heaney and Jeanette Winterson
• examine original manuscript pages to see how the poem took shape under Ezra Pound’s editing

“As someone coming from the wrong side of the two cultures, Eliot's poem had effectively been closed off to me for decades. Now it isn't, and that in itself would almost justify the price of the iPad that made it possible.”
-The Guardian, UK, John Naughton

The Waste Land is published jointly by Faber and Faber and RGB. Faber is the London publisher where Eliot himself worked for almost four decades; RGB is behind other revolutionary interactive books for iPad including The Elements and Solar System which are defining the future of publishing. The interviews and Fiona Shaw's performance are specially filmed by Adam Low, director of the BBC Arena documentary on Eliot.

Publication of The Waste Land in 1922 was a milestone in the literary history of the 20th Century. This edition carries forward Eliot's vision and vividly demonstrates how literature can be illuminated by the new digital medium.

The way forward

Having had the ipad a while now, its clear to me that its main potential is as a reading device. I can look up a word with one tap of a finger while reading an ebook, and it has rekindled (excuse the pun) my love of superhero comics. The use of newspaper and magazine apps, and the web, with an app like instapaper, which allows you to save interesting pages for reading later, is superb. However I believe that The Waste Land app takes us a step further to give a glimpse of the iPads true potential.

I also had an audio issue, which Touchpaper came back to me on within 24 hours. If it's not your mute button it's because the iPod app is on mute.

Highly recommend.

Wonderful

I imagine this ap has been a labour of love by the Faber team who created it, and is a joy for anyone who loves The Wasteland, so congratulations to them on producing a ‘must have' ap here. It has everything you could imagine you would love to see in an e-version of The Wasteland. Anyone lucky enough to have seen Fiona Shaw's superlative performance of The Wasteland will know that alone is worth buying this ap for. But Faber have pulled all the stops out for this and included so much more that is quite outstanding. A benchmark publication, I can't imagine how it could be improved.

Excellent

This is a welcome change of pace from Touch Press who usually focus on science subjects. It breathes new life into a formidable poem, you can listen to various readings including an electrifying intimate performance by Fiona Shaw which is worth the price of the app alone. You can bring up detailed textual notes to explain the hidden echos and meanings of the poem and a series of filmed essays,
Scholarly yet deeply engaging, it's a refreshing look at a classic poem, there is nothing like this on the app store.
I hope they produce something similar in the future, perhaps Shakespeare's sonnets or Dickens A Christmas Carol.
