iPhone 12 losing service

Received my iPhone 12 Pro on Friday. Activated it on Saturday. Sunday I drove for 10 mns and when I arrive to my destination I saw no reception bars and No Service. And in the middle of the screen in a grey box: Your iPhone is not Activated.

The only way to get the connection back was to toggle Airplane mode to ON then OFF.

The iPhone had the cellular mode to 5G Auto. I switched it to LTE to test. And it was the same.

So I resetted the network settings: same issue and I resetted the iPhone as a new iPhone and reinstalled everything from scratch (not from a saved backup): same issue.

I drove my car and found the exact location where the phone lost the network. If the phone lost the network it means I reach the end of the coverage area from a certain antenna. It looks like something happened with the phone when I reach a zone covered by a new antenna.

I called my operator and they told me that everything is good on their end and I have the right SIM card for a 5G device.

I called the Apple Tech Support and they remotely installed on my phone two profiles:

  • Baseband and Telephony Logging
  • CFNetwork Diagnostics

I was able to replicate the issue after talking to the Apple Tech and I was able to submit the report.

I pushed a little bit the research and I found on Reddit a lot of people talking about the same issue not only on Verizon (my carrier) but also on AT&T. Just use the title I typed and you will find the article.

I never had such issue with the 11pro.

After a painful number of hours on the phone with Verizon and Apple this weekend here's my update:

>> VERIZON: After trying the usual (take out/put back in sim card, restart, fiddle with various settings), the rep finally looked under "Device Issues" in her system and lo and behold there is an alert for this phone and connectivity issues. She read me the script that said it's a known issue and that they're looking into it with Apple. They also wanted to create a ticket for the issue (which she said they do when they're still trying to collect data on what exactly the problem is). So my suggestion is if Verizon is your carrier, call them and ask to create a ticket.

>> APPLE: I got escalated to a senior tech person after doing a factory reset and still having the problem. This is nice b/c I now have someone's direct line. According to his info, he has no record of there being a problem, but he was going to investigate and they're going to get back to me by Wednesday this week.

Here's what I've done so far. I have an iPhone 12 Pro. Spent about 10 hours on the phone with Apple and Spectrum, exchanged my first phone, swapped SIM cards 3 times, turned airplane mode on and off, did carrier and factory reset, switched to 4G only, tried every combination of signals(5G only, 5G Auto, & 4G only) with data roaming and WiFi calling on and off, tried it with location services off, tried it with Bluetooth turned off, basically everything! Nothing has worked. My phone drops calls or the person I'm talking to can't hear me but I can hear them. This is with a full 4G signal! If the person I'm talking to doesn't hang up when they can't hear me then it will eventually pick back up if it doesn't drop the call. Yes, these problems are when I'm driving. If iOS 14.3 and a carrier update don't fix this soon this phone is going back! My iPhone 8 worked perfect in the same area and I'm now wishing I had it back!

Ok UPDATE TIME (GOOD NEWS...kinda):

So I’ve been in this thread since the launch of the 12 Pro Max day and have had no success just like the other people. I did everything...talked to T-Mobile/Sprint and Apple for weeks to no avail. But I ACTUALLY have a working phone now. The only thing is, most of you are probably not going to be happy with the solution.

I ended up taking the huge risk of switching from T-Mobile and I went with Verizon. This was a big risk in my mind because 95% of the reported issues on this thread were with Verizon but I was having the issue with T-Mobile/Sprint.

So I was so tired of the situation and Verizon had an amazing switching Black Friday deal so o took the leap of faith.

Happy to report that my 5G/No Service/Slow Service, whatever you want to call it (the problem we are all having) is completely gone now that I’m on Verizon.

I get perfect 5G speeds (60mbs down 10mb up non ultrawide band) wherever I am in the previous problem area (my home).

SO if I had to give some advice, it would be switch carriers honestly. My best bet would be that they obviously use different towers (since it now works for me). It could possibly be a “quick” fix to the issue if it works just like it did with me. I understand this is probably not a possibility with many and that it won’t be possible for lots to return/do what they have to in order to switch. That’s why I said it was a great solution for me, most likely not for many however.

ANYWAY I hope everyone in the thread figures out a solution/and or Apple and the carriers figure their crap out. I’m super relieved that everything works on my end finally. All it took was switching to Verizon LOL (I know a lot of you will read that and roll your eyes since you’re already there).

All the best.

Then why I’m not having issues with iPhone XR ? It’s not about the career . I see 2 bars on my iPhone 12 where 5 bars on my iPhone XR ?

don’t you think that devices are backward compatible? Some thing is not right , may be it could be the phone I have have the issue then the question is about the other people ?

I don’t think it’s the coverage.

Iphone 12 pro iPhone not activated. I am able to replicate it over and over again at work. There is a dead spot in the paint booth I work in. When it loses signal for more than a minute it will not try to find the signal again. It just lays down and has the 4 dots at top and a pop up displays IPhone not activated I can restart it with airplane mode. As long as I stay away from no signal areas it not do this. The phone is supposed to be smart enough to begin searching for a signal by it self again. When I get this problem I can go into a high signal area and stills just lays there never trying to reconnect by it self. Flip the airplane switch and wala reconnects every time. This has to be a software problem. I know it’s a real problem for me.

Sorry if I missed this within the thread. Was getting my phone ready to send into apple and I turned off 'Find my phone' and like magic, all my data/service (Verizon) problems went away. Can someone else five this a whirl and see if the same happens? Again, sorry for being a blind doof if this has already been mentioned.

Same issue here. Solution (as sad as it may be on the iPhone flagship) is to turn off 5G all together!!

My personal opinion is that it’s not an issue with the iPhone but an issue with Verizon’s 5G network. A friend described it best, the phone is doing something similar to when it is trying to switch between a poor LTE signal and a decent 3G signal. So far all speed tests on Verizon 5G have resulted in a significantly slower speed than LTE. Again, turn off 5G, unlike AT&T Verizon doesn’t distinguish between the subpar 5G and the 5G that is over hyped.

I have the same problem on Vodafone in Australia. After coming from an iPhone 11pro to iPhone 12 pro. My new phone just loses service completely sometimes and in some instances just shows 3G. I haven’t seen 3G for many years but now I find myself dropping to 3G more often than not - or no service completely. Only regular solution that works to restore service is to reboot phone.

I’m sorry that others are also having this iPhone 12 loss-of-signal problem. But at least now I know that it’s not my imagination. I live in a Verizon only coverage area, that is just LTE. But like others, turning the phone off and back on (or airplane mode is easier) will always bring back cell service. It is funny that when I talk to AppleCare tech support, they act like they’ve never heard of the problem before in their life! You gotta love Plausible Deniability!

Gosh, Im having the same issue when I'm out and about. It seems like its trying to switch itself from 5g then to LTE and in the process I get nothing. It's been happening since I activated my 12pro. I have to toggle on and off my airplane mode as well to get it to catch up. Happened to me at the worst moment while I was trying to connect to my home doorbell camera in order to receive a package. smh I feel your pain

Same issue here on T-Mobile iPhone Pro 12 Max. I notice it often when I’m in the middle of a Pokemon Go PvP battle and the characters just suddenly stand there and i see the loading circle in the top corner. I’ve been having to quickly turn on and off airplane mode or Cellular Data mode/icon to get it to quickly come back.

It’s very annoying, especially while trying to Google search something it just suddenly doesn’t load and just sits there.

I recently switched to iPhone just over a year ago and it ***** seeing this issue consistently occur.

Clear to me that after to talking to both carriers, AT&T and Verizon, multiple Apple Techs and escalations, that Apple doesn’t know how to fix this problem. Don’t waste your time and energy. They will either come out with a fix, or you have to return your phone. Even returning the phone is a time sink. Whatever Apple was, it is no longer.
