Just to say to everyone thanks for your help - my problem is solved by upgrading to Mojave. All the key apps Numbers, Pages and Logic work fine.

High Sierra upgrade was a complete mistake - wish I had known this at the start... :)

There were specific versions of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote that were required for High Sierra, and those versions that worked in Sierra are not compatible with High Sierra. Apple does not store past, full installers of these applications for user download.

What you can try, with no guarantee that it will work, is to do the following:

  1. Launch the Mac App Store on High Sierra, and sign-in with the same Apple ID used when you installed these applications in Sierra.
  2. Press the option key and select the Purchases tab in the Mac App Store. This should be sufficient to reveal either an Install or Update button next to Pages, and Numbers. Click the Pages button first. You will receive a dialog that Pages requires macOS Catalina installed in order to complete the update, and immediately afterward, it may grant your wish, and volunteer to update Pages v6 - v7.2 to Pages v8.1, which is the last version for High Sierra. If this works, repeat it with Numbers.

It the process above fails to upgrade Pages to v8.1 for High Sierra, or Numbers to v9.1, then you are done, as the above was the last chance to install a compatible Pages and Numbers application for High Sierra — unless you have them updated on another High Sierra installation (with the same Apple ID).

I am certain that I pressed the option key while in App Store - it gave me an option to download an older version which I duly did. And the same thing happened.. trying to open any document causes catastrophic crash. Also in the App Store the 'install' button remains greyed out after download as opposed to 'Open'

I tried as well your iCloud suggestion - went into iCloud settings and ticked the boxes for Pages and Numbers. Then went into Finder preferenes and ticked the box to show iCloud Drive (which I very rarely use) in my finder. There are a few of my documents there .. but I still cannot see how to access the apps from this space...

Thank you for this very prompt and full response - I have tried your suggestion to the letter and in the column of my previous purchases the button on the right for both Numbers and Pages says 'Open' ( as opposed to Install)

Clicking on either of those buttons simply launches the App on my desktop with the same yellow triangle 'Pages quit unexpectedly' or 'Numbers quit unexpectedly'

No other options are available .. which suggests that in your very useful and detailed response I am 'done'

I find it absolutely astounding that I have spent the last 3 hours backing up my Macbook Pro and then installing High Sierra - to find that the two ESSENTIAL applications that i need for work as a self employed person are absolutely UNUSEABLE and there is no real warning for the average person - and I am a Mac User since 2000

I would appreciate any other suggestions as this is a real emergency

Just to revisit this, are you certain that you pressed the option key while clicking on the Purchases tab in the Mac App Store?

Plan B would be to sign into iCloud and use Pages for Mac there. You should visit System Preferences : iCloud : iCloud Drive : Options… and select Pages and Numbers, so their folders will appear in your iCloud Drive Finder sidebar.

"...in the App Store the 'install' button remains greyed out after download as opposed to 'Open' "

When did you upgrade to High Sierra? Was it in the past week?

Also, can you confirm the following after your upgrade...

...are the rest of your App Store apps working?

...are the built-in apps working (Calendar, Contacts, etc.)

...are locally installed apps working (sourced from disk or the internet)?

Finally what exactly is the observed behaviour...

...are apps failing and produce a crash report you can read, and/or

...are apps failing and present a dialogue box saying broken, and/or

...are apps failing and doing nothing at all?

Thank you for your reply-

Installed High Sierra Yesterday afternoon with the help of my tech guru of the past 15 years

Immediately pages, numbers and Logic pro stopped working… Impossible to boot them up. When you do with each app it gives you the screen with the yellow triangle and crash report to send to Apple

Further to Viking comment on this thread I went back on the App Store and searched for older version of pages and numbers and downloaded them… Exactly the same response when trying to boot up the above named applications.

Any further suggestions appreciated as these 3 apps - Logic, pages, numbers of the most essential basic apps are use every day for my self-employed business as a musician
