My purpose here is to explore True Storytelling events in my own life, and how I try but do not always succeed to get to living a true storytelling life.

I'm David Michael Boje, on a journey, to survive STAGE 4 Cancer. Can I do it? What are the challenges of Stage 4 Prostate Cancer? January 2 2020 I saw blood in urine. Now I'm at MD Anderson Cancer Center. My PSA was 26.8. After the Androgen Deprivation Therapy (aka, chemical castration), it dropped to 8.0, then 6.0. The challenge is cancer tricks the body into protecting it. Ouch! I lucked out, got into a Clinical Trial for a new Medication that anticipates cancer's next move. Now the PSA is less than .01, which means it is UNMEASURABLE. But that's not the end of the story. Cancer finds a way to trick the body, to find new food. So its time for radiation treatments.

Early episodes lead up to the first radiation treatment. There are many challenges, like having to cope with the need to pee, how to have sex when my testosterone is near zero, the terror of MRI machines, and so on.

Along the way I share with you secrets of storytelling I have learned over last 45 years? I am a storytelling researcher, a storytelling professor with 29 books and 150 articles on organizational storytelling.

I invented the term ANTENARRATIVE. It is all the stuff that goes into constructing a story. Out of the antenarrative stuff, narratives are created. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Antenarrative links discourse to narrative and story. Antenarrative is what comes before all that. And antenarrative is a set of 7 processes

What is BECOMING in True Storytelling?

What is BECOMING in True Storytelling?

    Becoming is Principle 5

    5. Help stories along: You must be able to help stories on their way and be open to experiment

What is it to be in BEING experiencing the radiations of life?

What is it to be in BEING experiencing the radiations of life?

This is principle 4 of True Storytelling: Time.
    4. Timing: You must have timing.

And it's about the ontology of Being. My stories are about finding freedom in the more difficult circumstance of stage 4 cancer radiation treatments at MD Anderson Cancer Clinic, my friend Debra dying of Stage 4 throat cancer, my Being-with my wife, family, and friends and the concern and care shown to me by the technicians and doctors.

It is a time of being in the event-ness of Being, not in past or future, but noticing the little things of life.

What is True Storytelling of Your History?

What is True Storytelling of Your History?

2nd Principle of true storytelling: respecting stories already there. The antenarrative process BEFORE, of a deep history, vs. one that is shallow

How do we sort out all the different histories we are a part of, in our living the true storytelling life?
How to restory the trauma? How to remember the stories already there?

What is True Storytelling? Principles and Processes overview

What is True Storytelling? Principles and Processes overview

    What is True Storytelling?

Simple answer: It is principles of getting at what's true instead of the fake and its the underlying processes called antenarratives.

Here are 7 True Storytelling Principles -- see truestorytelling.org for more info:
    1. Truth: You yourself must be true and prepare the energy and effort for a sustainable future
    2. Make room: True storytelling makes spaces respecting the stories already there
    3. Plot: You must create stories with a clear plot creating direction and help people prioritize
    4. Timing: You must have timing
    5. Help stories along: You must be able to help stories on their way and be open to experiment
    6. Staging: You must consider staging including scenography and artifacts
    7. Reflecting: You must reflect on the stories and how they create value

The 7 Antenarrative Processes, please see antenarrative.org
"Antenarrative is defined as ‘the fragmented, non-linear, incoherent, collective, unplotted, and pre-narrative speculation, a bet, a proper narrative can be constituted’" (Boje, 2001: 1).

    Antenarrative Constituting Processes
    1 Beneath (fore-conception)
    2 Before (fore-having)
    3 Bets (fore-sight)
    4 Being (fore-getting)
    5 Becoming (fore caring)
    6 Between (fore-structuring)
    7 Beyond (fore-situating)

As an example, we look at some critique of the Netflix Documentary, 'Heal', a really good deconstruction of it's storytelling at 'Cruel World Happy Mind' titled: WEIRDEST "HEALTH" DOCUMENTARY YET?! Reacting to Netflix's Heal

How I am doing after day 1 radiation and getting chiropractic adjustment?

How I am doing after day 1 radiation and getting chiropractic adjustment?

Yesterday was day 1 of radiation therapy at MD Anderson Cancer Clinic. I have stage 4 prostate cancer, and I am glad to report, day one was awesome. I had to learn how to hold a lot more wate than usual, and managed to figure out a way that worked for me.

I also got to a chiropractor, who did something amazing. I have not been able to walk more than a block without numbness, shooting pain, etc. in left leg. But it turns out that my right leg has been getting weak (due to lots of structural out-of-alignment), and my left leg has been doing most of the work when I walk. He did what's called muscle testing, and it turns out it was the right leg that needed to be able to do more to keep me in balance.

Why is this true storytelling? Because in both events of this day, there are many possibilities,, many hypotheses, but finding what's true is about weeding out what is not working.

Now that I see light at the end of these tunnels, its time to change the plot and make a new bet on the future.
