Gang Starr Essentials

Gang Starr Essentials

Gang Starr were crucial to several movements in hip-hop. Comprised of Guru and DJ Premier, they were at the forefront of fusing hip-hop and jazz in the early '90s. Though Guru's from Boston and DJ Premier from Texas, the pair is known to have crafted the New York sound of the '90s. They were underground gods. Both members branched out into endeavors that help solidify the GS brand. Primo was hip-hop's most sought-after producer, cooking up tracks for Nas, JAY Z and the Notorious B.I.G. while Guru released installments of his Jazzmatazz. They also introduced Jeru the Damaja and Group Home via their Gang Starr Foundation. Some of their classic works include Hard to Earn and The Moment of Truth, the latter became the duo's first gold-selling LP in 1998. Their Greatest Hits compilation, Full Clip, also went gold a year later. Guru died of  cancer in 2010.
