BLACKPINK Essentials

K-pop quartet BLACKPINK mix elements of rap into their pop to craft brash, booming songs. They crashed into the Korean music scene in 2016 with the uptempo electro cut “BOOMBAYAH” and the more unnerving chug of “WHISTLE.” Since then, they've gradually incorporated other styles into their music. They deliver swaggering verses above hard-hitting beats (“DDU-DU DDU-DU”) and venture into heartfelt balladry over acoustic guitar (“STAY”). They've worked with Western acts like Dua Lipa, creating shuffling dance pop playing off one another's strengths, and it's unique collaborations like this that highlight their ascendance outside Korea.
