Shift & Command Key delay

Hi all,

It seems like my shift and command buttons are not working properly when I want to select multiple items. It became very noticeable in Finder & Adobe apps (especially Illustrator, where I'm working on a lot). I have to hold it for a few moments before selecting the files.

If I use a shortcut where I have to press shift & command at the same time, they are fine.

I've disabled slow keys. I've tried resetting the PRAM but the problem still remains the same.

I'm using Macbook Pro M1 Pro 14" with MacOS Monterey.

Thank you!~

Hey ccndrn,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.

We noticed your MacBook Pro doesn't have the latest macOS installed, so we suggest updating it by following the steps here:

"Before you get started, it's a good idea to back up your Mac. Then follow these steps to find and install any available software updates or upgrades.

  1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Preferences.
  2. In the System Preferences window, click Software Update.
  3. If your System Preferences doesn't include Software Update, learn how to upgrade to macOS Monterey or upgrade to an older macOS, and use the Updates tab of the App Store app to get app updates.
  4. Click Update Now or Upgrade Now:
    • Update Now installs the latest updates for the currently installed version, such as an update from macOS Big Sur 11.5 to macOS Big Sur 11.6.
    • Upgrade Now installs a major new version with a new name, such as macOS Monterey. Software Update shows only upgrades that are compatible with your Mac."

The steps are listed in this article as well: Update macOS on Mac. Updates include fixes that may be related to the issue you're experiencing.

Take care.

Hi ccndrn,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

We can try to isolate this issue with the keys to your user or system-wide by testing the issue inside a new user account. This page describes how to make one: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

"Add a user

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups .
  2. If the lock at the bottom left is locked , click it to unlock the preference pane.
  3. Click the Add button  below the list of users.
  4. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.
  5. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
  6. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
  7. Click Create User."

Let us know if the issue is present there.

Have a fantastic day!

Verify something did not get turned on in Accessibility—

Toggle these options again to jump start a change, and then come back to your preferred settings.

On your Mac, use the Hardware pane of Accessibility Keyboard preferences to enable and set options for Sticky Keys and Slow Keys.

To change these preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences,

click Accessibility , click Keyboard, then click Hardware.
