Paul Collard has been the Chief Executive of Creativity, Culture and Education, where he retired from. He has 25 years’ experience of working in the arts and is an expert in delivering programs that use creativity and culture as drivers of social and economic change.
'We defined the creative habits of mind: curious, inquisitive, persistent, disciplined and collaborative. I believe that creativity is the way we learn. I believe that learning is the most wonderfull thing we humans have came up with. But the tragedy is that most children are locked out of learning, by schools, who do not promote learning, but promote schooling.'

Miranda Siemelink workes as a project lead at the Lab, from CultuurOost. The Lab is a professional learning community, consisting of arts educators, teachers, students from both art school and teacher training, artists, musicians and other experts.
They spend 4 years working together on enhancing arts education, divided in different groups. The Lab that Miranda has worked on, one of four, was centered around maker education.

Jane O'Hanlon, education officer of Poetry Ireland. We talk about the initiative Writers in Schools. She started as a teacher in a prison. She tells us what she learned from the inmates and still uses in her work. And she talks about how she thinks the arts help children to ask the big questions.
'The most powerfull experience of my teaching career has been reading King Lear with the inmates. They knew King Lear from the inside. It was a great example of how arts can help reflect and learn.'

This is a very special episode for us and of course we hope you'll enjoy it too! We are going to talk to one of our own, about the work that we are doing together.
Klaas Dijkstra is teacher at Basisschool de Pijlstaart, Manja and Linda have been working with Klaas since 2011! This is a longlasting teacher-artist partnership. In this episode we'll take you with us to Klaas' classroom. What happens after such a long period of a teacher and two artists creating education together.
As an example we are discussing our latest co-created project called Chilling with Heritage. In this project we added another discipline to our team, namely historians, to create a project in which citizenship, history, heritage, art and creativity come together.
'When we use the 'chilling' exercises the children can dive pretty deep into images of art. They have really interesting ideas and thoughts about what they are seeing.'

Jolanda is a visual artist, lecturer at the Utrecht School of the Arts and she works as project lead in Creatief Vermogen Utrecht, Creative Competence Utrecht.
Jolanda has been working in the arts for 30 years in many roles. In this conversation we talk about her huge watercolour painting and her community arts work with refugees and Creatief Vermogen Utrecht.
Creatief Vermogen Utrecht is a network of 43 creative partnerships between cultural and arts organisations and schools. In these partnerships teachers and artists work together in many different ways. The network also creates models and tools for arts education.
'We use the diamond as a metaphor for the creative process, to give teacher a hand in recognizing different facets of the creative process. Imagination, reflection, creative thinking are some examples.'

Sanja Krsmanović Tasić is the president of CEDEUM, a youth theater company in Belgrade, Serbia. Throughout her career she had many roles, starting out as a dancer, and slowly moving on to directing and founding many initiatives for theatre and dance.
In this conversation we hear Sanja tell us about the importance of having mentors who help you grow in your professional work.
And, as she makes clear, she was born in Yugoslavia and now lives in Serbia. She reminisces on working as a dancer during the war in Yugoslavia, how she missed having words as a dancer to voice her opinion. This was her motivation to go into theatre.
'We see arts education also as peace education. If you change one person, on child. Give them the freedom to visualize that another world is possible, it's a good start.'
