Parkway Drive’s Surfer Goth Playlist

Parkway Drive’s Surfer Goth Playlist

“Surfer Goth” might seem like an untenable contradiction in moods, but it makes perfect sense when you hear the inward-looking, often cathartic songs curated by Parkway Drive on their exclusive playlist for Apple Music. “These are the songs for the stormy drives down the coast,” vocalist Winston McCall tells Apple Music. “The songs for the dark roads just before dawn that stick in your head when the sun comes up. These are the songs that stick in my head when the waves have washed everything else away.”    Coming off their own brutally introspective seventh album, 2022’s Darker Still, Byron Bay’s blockbuster metalcore act have indeed assembled some of the darkest songs to ever grace the mainstream. That includes Danzig’s “Mother”, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ “Red Right Hand”, Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” and The Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black”. But there are brighter spots that point to the summer half of the playlist’s theme, thanks to The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows” and Elton John’s “Rocket Man”. Also brace yourself for Alanis Morrisette’s roaring heartbreak anthem “Ironic” and newer cuts from the likes of Future Islands and Zeal & Ardor. And read on for insight from the band about three standout tracks.   Ghost, “Call Me Little Sunshine” “This song oozes fog and haze and smoke. The riff is undeniable, the darkness is real and inviting and the chorus never leaves you once it’s crept its way in.”   Queens of the Stone Age, “If I Had a Tail“ “The first time I heard this I was convinced it was Bowie. I still think it could be via some dark possession of Josh Homme. That’s enough to make it worthy of any drive.”   Radiohead, “Karma Police” “Apart from being an all-time song, the music video is literally the creepiest night-time drive you can imagine.”
