About Batushka

Batushka were a controversial Polish black metal band that has since split into two factions, with both using the same name. The music is drenched in imagery and texts from Eastern Orthodox Christianity with lyrics sung exclusively in Old Church Slavonic. Their songs contain lines of liturgical chanting backed by black metal instrumentation and aesthetics, and they dress in hooded robes. The original band issued the universally acclaimed debut long-player, Litourgiya in December 2015 and signed to Metal Blade. Afterwards, a split occurred and was mediated inconclusively by the courts. It left both versions of Batushka allowed to use the name. One, led by founding multi-instrumentalist Krzysztof Drabikowski, issued 2019's acclaimed Requiem. The other, led by vocalist Bartłomiej Krysiuk (aka Bart). released Hospodi on Metal Blade in 2019. In 2021, with no final legal solution to naming rights, Bart's version of Batushka independently released the five-track Raskol EP.
