Return to the Beginning

Return to the Beginning

When DNH Records handed back Da Capo’s catalogue, containing material he released on the label as an emerging producer circa 2010, it freed him to deliver a compilation of both new and unreleased songs dating back as far as 2008. Return to the Beginning—a title reappropriated from his 2010 EP—is a journey to Da Capo’s early days. With a majority of the collection’s songs being instrumental, it’s his skill as a producer that shines through: The beats are consistently spacious enough to make room for haunting chants (“Sabir”), robust drumming on the Black Motion-assisted “Zone Out” or the strobing synths of “Indigo”. Return to the Beginning is characterised by a uniformity that points to a producer who not only found his voice but has also sustained it.
