    SHOW NOTES Episode 285: Building a community that connects, collaborates and creates together!

    Guests: The Southern C Founders Cheri Leavy and Whitney Long

    THIS WEEK’S TOPIC:

    Ever find that when someone in your network says “You would be so great at that,” or maybe when they suggest an opportunity for you, their vote of support can supercharge your confidence?

    I’ve benefited from that type of encouragement more times than I can count. It’s a powerful gift for both the giver and the receiver!

    That is one of many reasons why it can be so critical to build a strong support network and community.

    This week, we dig into why building and being part of a community can create significant momentum for your business, why it can be a vital component for problem solving and shared learning, and of course how it can result in mutually beneficial collaborations. The benefits don’t stop there. The connections we create through shared community are a vital part of the human experience. We’re likely to live longer and experience much deeper levels of happiness, gratitude and ultimately success — however we define it — when we are intentional about community.

    THIS WEEK’S GUESTS:  I’m joined by my two wonderful friends Cheri Leavy and Whitney Long. Cheri and Whitney are the co-founders of The Southern C, a network for creative entrepreneurs and a collaboration partner of mine for the past three years!

    These two amazing women saw a need they and other entrepreneurs were experiencing, and sprang into action to fill it. Today, the Southern C provides support, education, connection, and endless opportunities to collaborate for creative entrepreneurs.

    If you’ve been listening to She Said/She Said Podcast for a while, you’ve heard from some of the women who are part of The Southern C network. Their stories, advice, and perspective are a big part of what makes The Southern C such a special organization.  Today, you’ll hear directly from the group’s founders!

    WHAT YOU’LL LEARN FROM THE CONVERSATION:

    How Cheri and Whitney built The Southern C

    What makes this particular network so unique

    What they have learned over the past 11 years

    How they have deployed their own transferable skills into creating and building The Southern C

    Some great examples of The Southern C at work!

    Guest: Sarah Wetenhall, CEO + Co-owner The Colony Hotel Palm Beach

    THIS WEEK’S TOPIC:

    Creating a unique experience for your customer or client is often what separates the most successful brands from their competition. That’s also true as it relates to our personal brands. What are those unique aspects of your story, your values, your experiences that come together to create your own one of a kind brand? And, what is the discipline required to make sure your potential customer understands who you are and what you stand for?

    As part of our third collaboration series with the creative entrepreneur network The Southern C, we’re diving into the most important elements of building a strong and unique brand, and how doing so can be an important element in creating and building our influence.

    ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Sarah Wetenhall is the award-winning, CEO + Co-owner of The Colony Hotel Palm Beach, and the visionary behind Palm Beach’s historic Pink Paradise. A former public relations and marketing exec at major fashion houses including Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, and Hugo Boss, Sarah’s pivot to hotelier came following an almost decade-long break to raise her three children. Guided by decades of time spent in Palm Beach and an acute attention to detail, she created a stylish, multi-generational pink oasis that preserved the property’s storied history and engages visitors with a vibrant and refreshed luxury experience. She was recently named one of Hotel Magazine’s Top Ten Independent Hoteliers.

    WHAT YOU’LL LEARN FROM THE CONVERSATION:

    How Sarah found her way to The Colony.

    How she took what she learned from major fashion houses about building a unique brand and deployed that knowledge in revitalizing The Colony.

    How Sarah tackled aspects of revitalizing The Colony that were entirely new to her.

    Sarah’s advice for developing a mission statement to guide your brand and all the decisions that will follow.

    282. How following your creative passions can lead to incredible success! with interior designer Paloma Contreras

    SHOW NOTES

    282. How following your creative passions can lead to incredible success! with interior designer Paloma Contreras

    TOPIC:

    Have you ever talked yourself out of taking a leap or trying something new because you convinced yourself that you needed another degree, an additional certification, more experience, a better network, more followers, more downloads, or just MORE?

    Qualifications and experience are incredibly important to be sure, but sometimes we let what we think is required of a job or new pursuit stand in the way of our even taking the first step toward learning important new skills.

    This part of my conversation with award-winning interior designer and best-selling author Paloma Contreras is one of my favorites.

    ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST:

    Paloma Contreras honed her distinct eye for style over more than a decade in the design industry, and developed a reputation for designing beautiful interiors in her signature modern-meets-traditional aesthetic resulting in spaces that feel polished, refined, and effortless.

    Paloma has repeatedly been named to the prestigious ELLE Decor “A-List” of the top interior designers in the world. She has also been recognized as a “Next Wave” interior designer by House Beautiful and has been named to LUXE Magazine’s “Gold List”. Paloma has been named one of the Top Social Media Influencers in the Home category by Forbes and has one of the Top 10 Instagram accounts to follow for interior design, according to ELLE Decor. Her work has been featured extensively in countless publications including ELLE Decor, Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Vogue, Domino, Luxe, Traditional Home, Southern Living, among others.

    Paloma designs a lighting collection for Visual Comfort & Co., and has written two best-selling design books: “Dream Design Live,” and “The New Classic Home.” Her curated retail shop, Paloma & Co, opened in Houston’s River Oaks neighborhood in January 2019, and has expanded to include an online platform.

    Paloma’s pivot from high school Spanish teacher to design blogger, to marketing exec, to interior designer and author, have one critically important thing in common: Paloma wasn’t afraid to try to do something she would have to learn on the job. She also wasn’t afraid of the setbacks and even failures that would come with trial and error, and she certainly wasn’t afraid of hard work.

    WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE:

    How Paloma made the career pivot from high school Spanish teacher to award-winning interior designer;

    How Paloma thinks about the creative process and where she finds inspiration;

    How she built her multi-faceted design business;

    How she learned how much to charge for her work;

    How she turned a blogging hobby into a multi dimensional design business with fabulous collaborations;

    Paloma also shares some very tactical advice on accessorizing and adding those very personal layers that turn a house into a home that reflects its occupants.

    280. Unleashing the Power of Collaboration: Weaving empathy and compassion into your brand with Fanm Mon Founder Sophia Demirtas!

    SHOW NOTES

    Episode 280: How to weave the power of collaboration into your brand

    Guest: Sophia Demirtas, founder of fashion design house Fanm Mon

    THIS WEEK’S TOPIC:

    When we allow ourselves to think broadly, and to ignore tendencies toward comparison, it can enhance our ability to create, and can help us do so in bigger and bolder ways.

    As we kick off our third collaboration series with the creative entrepreneur network The Southern Coterie, it’s fitting that we kick off the series with an entrepreneur whose approach to collaboration is deeply embedded in her past career as a social worker, as well as in her rich Haitian heritage.

    When collaborations don’t work, it may be because they simply aren’t a good fit. But, it’s also possible that one side –or both — may be missing an other-oriented approach that is rooted in empathy.

    ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Sophia Demirtas is the founder of Turkish-based fashion house Fanm Mon. Fanm Mon is known for its gorgeous embroidery, made-to-order designs, and attention to special details that are a nod to Sophia’s Haitian heritage. But Sophia’s career didn’t begin in fashion. It’s that interesting detail that informs how she approaches the many collaborations she and her company are engaged in, and also how she manages her team.

    WHAT YOU’LL LEARN FROM THE CONVERSATION:

    How Sophia built Fanm Mon.

    Sophia’s philosophy behind the brand.

    Her path to becoming a fashion entrepreneur.

    Why she embraced a made-to-order model.

    How she approaches collaborations with other brands.

    The challenges of building a brand in a country that is new to you.

    Scaling the brand.

    Different approaches to collaborations with other brands and with influencers.

    There is so much great advice and perspective in this episode, and I’m excited to hear your feedback. You can reach me via the link in the show notes which you’ll find here in Episode 280: shesaidshesaidpodcast.com .  Or, email me: info@shesaid.media
