Ties

The debut album from Australian singer-songwriter FELIVAND—aka Felicity Vanderveen—deals in breezy, textured neo-soul that incorporates jazzy flourishes, lush keys, skittering beats, and thick, rolling basslines. Her vulnerable, confessional lyrics, however, are anything but laidback. “Am I a gimmick or am I a friend?” she asks in “Where Were You,” a song about being let down by someone. In “Butterfly Wings”—which is about the universe being on your side one minute but then feeling clueless and defeated the next—she admits, “My anxiety is spikin’/nail bitin’.” And while “Not My Way” is a song about forgiveness, it features the bruising opening couplet “You looked at me with hooded eyes/You took his word over mine/Didn’t look when you crossed that line/That’s when your colors showed.” Working with collaborators such as Maxwell Byrne (Mallrat, Cub Sport) and LA-based production duo Wes Singerman and Taydex (Anderson .Paak, Princess Nokia), FELIVAND’s emotionally complex lyrics are a fitting accompaniment to her musically intricate earworms.
