It is only the direction in which I’d like for you to Look and then you can see what you see. This podcast, I hope, can be ignition, inspiration and curiosity for others whilst sating my own inquiry and desire to integrate creative form with general living life. To make something that transcends boundary and genre.' In the final episode of this series I explore the last two Rules written by Sister Corita Kent, plus the ‘helpful hints’ at the end….

Rule 9 : ’Be happy whenever you can manage it. Enjoy yourself. It’s lighter than you think.’
Rule 10: ‘ “We’re breaking all of the rules even our own rules and how do we do that? By leaving plenty of room for X quantities.” John Cage’
Helpful Hints: Always be around, come or go to everything, always go to classes, read anything you can get your hands on. Look at movies carefully often. Save everything - it might come in handy later. . .
I’m so so so happy that you’ve joined me on this journey. Making this series of podcasts was exceptionally fun. Hope it’s been of benefit. Hope to see some of you beauties at the upcoming workshops…
In this series I circumambulate (walk around/talk around) the magic of Creativity using the template of 10 Rules that were written by a fascinating woman called Sister Corita Kent.
In each episode I interpret and elaborate on one or two of these rules according to my own life experience.

Hopefully this accumulation of thoughts expressed gives the listener some inspiration & foundational knowledge on how to Cultivate a Creative Life.

‘Don’t try to Create and Analyse at the same time. They’re different processes.’
I absolutely love this reminder. Comparing the two processes to feminine, masculine principles (energies that exist in us as whole individuals).
This is one of the rules I return to often.
This episode also features another favourite line of mine: ‘Kill Your Darlings’ and looks at the importance of intention behind the analysing/editing part of making thigns.

‘Nothing is a Mistake, there’s no win and no fail. There’s only make’
‘The Only rule is Work. If you work it will lead to something. It’s the people who do all of the work all of the time who eventually catch on to things.’
I talk about the good old Inner Critic and how it comes up in a big way at different, but predictable, cyclic moments for those who menstruate.
I read an excerpt from a brilliant book by Mary Oliver to show how important it is to Show Up for the creative forces within you.

So this, I think, is a really interesting rule:
‘Be Self-Disciplined. This means finding someone wise or smart & choosing to follow them. To be disciplined is to follow in a good way. To be self disciplined is to follow in a better way.’
I choose to go a little off-piste / off-road / off-topic (?) with this one; I interpret this rule in my own way as, in truth, I don’t know what Sister Corita Kent intended to mean in this circumstance.
Again I talk a lot about my rudimentary learnings in the world of Buddhism, mainly stemming from the time I spent in a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery.
I talk about how very important it is to have an inner compass that guides you and has a stronger magnetic pull than any external force…

    ‘Consider Everything an Experiment’
In this episode I get talking about a favourite hand book of mine, written by Chogyam Trungpa, interpreting the ‘Slogans of Atisha’ which are a bunch of succinct one or two liners that are, in some way, supposed to boil the magic of Buddhism and Buddhist practice down to something concise.
I look at what ‘Experimenting’ looks like for creative people compared to what it might look like for a professional Scientist.
I talk about ‘Not Knowing’ and why that is pretty darn important in the process of writing a song, or making anything at all.

In this Episode I explore rules 2 & 3 of Sister Corita Kent’s ’10 Enduring Rules for a Creative Life’.
    2) General duties of a student; Pull everything out of your Teacher, pull everything out of your fellow students
3)General duties of a teacher; pull everything out of your students.
I take us into the learning environment, exclaiming the wonders of finding a ‘good’ teacher & the joy of finding companions who share our dreams & desires for self-development (whatever that might be), that we might adventure & take challenge with.

Loving this!

Thank you so much for your love and confusions xxx

The name's James ,

A meditation

A meditation on the act of human creativity, broken down piece by piece into something more tangible and approachable. Inviting the listener not just to listen but to go forth and to be.

Rachel’s voice, spoken or sung, is also the kind that could calm storms and steer raging beasts toward gentle sleep.

Insightful, inspiring - a must listen to anybody creating anything

Like having a really good conversation with a close friend. An honest and insightful response to questions about the creative process and facing the inner critic. As well as sharing poems close to her and why. An inspiring listen! Can’t wait for more.
