Torn Tapestries

Sio
Torn Tapestries

For her third album, Sio reconnects with STY TRU BTS for a vulnerable performance, where the gentleness she shows herself after love lost is reanimated in 11 billowing tracks. “Love came and left, and I penned my tears in song,” Sio tells Apple Music. “This album explores the myriad of messy emotions that heartbreak wrung through, on an electronic, future-soul soundscape that doesn’t allow for sorrow or any more tears. We weave into each other’s lives and sometimes rip ourselves out of each other, leaving ragged holes behind that we learn to love with in time.” The breaking apart of entanglements that were once affirming and beautiful comes into view on “Yuse” and “Torn Tapestries,” where more questions than answers arise, detailing the ebb and flow of coming away from another and coming back to the self all at once. Breathing new air into brittle feelings on “Heartburn (Sooibrand),” she contemplates longing turned to lessons learned, while leaning into a soft darkness on “Pillowcase” and “Down.” With silkily spoken-word interludes in “Chet Baker” and “Dream,” she’s closing one chapter and ushering in the next—this time with a new wealth of emotions and experiences to find words for.
