Publisher Description

Alexia Maccon, the Lady Woolsey, awakens in the wee hours of the mid-afternoon to find her husband, who should be decently asleep like any normal werewolf, yelling at the top of his lungs. Then he disappears; leaving her to deal with a regiment of supernatural soldiers encamped on her doorstep, a plethora of exorcised ghosts, and an angry Queen Victoria.

But Alexia is armed with her trusty parasol, the latest fashions, and an arsenal of biting civility. So even when her investigations take her to Scotland, the backwater of ugly waistcoats, she is prepared: upending werewolf pack dynamics as only the soulless can. She might even find time to track down her wayward husband, if she feels like it.

Changeless is the second book of the Parasol Protectorate series: a comedy of manners set in Victorian London, full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.

Highly recommend

I decided to read through all of Gail Carriger’s books after randomly picking the San Andres Shifters off the bookshelf at a store. I loved it and as soon as I realized it was part of a more expansive universe, I had to read them all.

Gail Carriger has a lovely and witty author voice and the world build is astounding. But I think my favorite part of her writing is her characters. They come right off the page. I want to dive inside and hang out with them. It’s clear how this book was able to kickstart the universe - I want to follow each character home and learn their story. I want to know the entire timeline of each hive, pack, agency, and secret society. I’m so thrilled I stumbled upon this world and I’m looking forward to every moment of this journey.

I was trying to use listening to audiobooks as a reward - listening to Gail Carriger stories while going for a walk instead of sitting sedentary, while doing chores around the house, or while sitting in traffic to/from obligations. But I can’t help myself and I’m just ripping through them. Las night as I was falling asleep, I kept hearing Lord Maccon’s Scottish burr.

Speaking of, I adore this narrator. I get easily irritated by the narrator quirks when listening to audiobooks, but this lady is awesome. The only thing that ever bugged me was her pronunciation of Lord Akeldama’s name in the first book, but she fixes it later in the series, so all is forgiven.

I’m not fond of the price point of audiobooks (though considering the labor, it’s certainly understandable), so I was going to wait at least a week after finishing this one before moving on to book three, but the ending got me in a tizzy and I bought the next book immediately after. Haha
