Here It Is: A Tribute to Leonard Cohen

Part of what makes the Leonard Cohen tribute album Here It Is interesting is that it tries to avoid the obvious. Yes, there’s “Hallelujah” (sung by Sarah McLachlan) and “Suzanne” (Gregory Porter), but there’s also Iggy Pop singing the late-period “You Want It Darker” and Mavis Staples on 1984’s relatively unexplored “If It Be Your Will.” And while Cohen’s approach to music was at least as singular as the lyrics he’s so often consecrated for, the approach of having a house band—including guitarist Bill Frisell, saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, and drummer Nate Smith—gives Here It Is a sonic continuity that concentrates the weary, sophisticated side of Cohen’s music to a fine point.
