After being raped by a neighbor, teenager Dolores Price consoles herself with copious amounts of junk food and television. Her traumatic experiences eventually land her in a mental institution, where things finally begin to improve. Author Wally Lamb approaches the novel’s heavy themes—which include suicide and forced abortion—with a striking gentleness. He also balances the novel’s darkness with vivid, often funny descriptions of everyday life in ’60s and ’70s New England. What a book
Oh my god. This I think is a story that won’t ever leave me. There were points I didn’t think I could go on. I was so consumed I couldn’t put it down.
And what a great way to end the story. The past few books I’ve read I hated the endings and this was just perfect. So glad I read this
