Controlled By Hatred / Feel Like Shit... Déjà-vu

This 1989 compilation combines two shorter works. The first four tracks comprise Controlled by Hatred, while the remaining songs are Feel Like Shit…Déjà Vu. The sound here is heavily influenced by second guitarist Mike Clark, who joined the band in 1987. He and his former group, No Mercy, were pals of Suicidal from Venice, Calif., and had affected Mike Muir’s decision to take Suicidal in a more thrash-oriented direction. As a form of tribute—or maybe a joining of forces—this release contains four No Mercy covers: “Master of No Mercy,” “Waking the Dead,” “Controlled by Hatred,” and “Choosing My Own Way of Life.” These are arguably the heaviest songs Suicidal had recorded to date. The tracks have a deeply abrasive sound, and there's palpable chemistry between Clark and virtuoso shredder Rocky George, while new bassist Robert Trujillo brings fresh hunger. Suicidal Tendencies were more powerful than ever, but much to the delight of their fans, Muir still sang with the rage of an injured, unstable teenager.
