About Josiah Johnson

Best known as the co-founder and former frontman for Seattle indie folk ensemble the Head and the Heart, Josiah Johnson took a leave of absence from his longtime band in the late 2010s, emerging a few years later as a solo artist. Carrying with him vestiges of the band's familiar exultant chamber folk and pop tone, he delivered his impassioned solo debut, Every Feeling on a Loop, for the ANTI- label in 2020. Initially on a path toward math and computer science during his college days, Johnson's passion for music eventually usurped his sturdier plans, and a chance collaboration at a Seattle open mic led to the formation of the Head and the Heart in 2009. Key players in the global indie folk boom around the turn of the decade, the Head and the Heart made two successful albums for Sub Pop before stepping up to the majors with their Warner Bros.-issued third album, Signs of Light. Struggling with addiction, Johnson managed to complete the record, but he opted to step away from the band months before its September 2016 release. Named after one of his songs, Signs of Light gave the Head and the Heart the highest chart placement of their career, peaking at number five on the Billboard 200. Despite its success, Johnson bowed out of all subsequent touring and eventually left the band completely as he tried to get himself sober. He re-emerged clean and sober in early 2020 with a clutch of new songs documenting his personal journey. Working with Peter Lalish from the band Lucius, Johnson and a small crew of handpicked players recorded what would become his debut solo album, Every Feeling on a Loop, which was released by ANTI- in September 2020. ~ Timothy Monger
