Hang in there… it gets less annoying
I was annoyed with book at first as it offended my feminist sensibility, but CB is an excellent writer, so I continued on, trusting the process. Omra’s character developed throughout the book (becoming more independent and sassy!) and Dak’s patriarchal heavy handedness was tempered by his inner dialogue regarding his feelings for Omra. You just have to wait for the story to develop a bit to grow to like the characters more, but it was worth it. * shrug.

Omra had the bad luck to be born female on a planet where females have less worth than animals. They’re purchased to provide heirs to the males as their breeder, as dispassionately as possible is the expectation. When feelings become involved it’s seen as a weakness and a violation of the law. But then again; the heart wants what the heart wants…

I didn’t know whether I would like this or not , but the further I got into it, the better the story.
