La República

La República

A viral hit in 2018, “Rebota” imparted a certain impish reputation for Guaynaa, one he seemed to revel in. That mischievousness mixed with an undeniable flair for the reggaetón form continues to serve the Puerto Rican sensation well on his full-length La República. Thumping songs like “What A Montón,” “Toca,” and the Play-N-Skillz production “POMPEA” fit his established style as if custom-made, his knack for clever phrasing and anthemic hooks on full display. That said, he keeps his options fairly open here, dynamically dabbling in Dominican dembow with El Alfa on “Chikitita” and trying a more tropical tack on “Los Cachos” with salsa-popsters Servando & Florentino. A collaboration with Mexico City’s long-running Los Ángeles Azules, “Cumbia A La Gente” is bound to baffle some before it delights. Even more surprising than that is “Ingenuo Corazón,” its apparent earnestness coming across as downright disruptive by comparison with the rest of the mostly fun fare.
