There's a purity and sense of innocent joy to Gerry & The Pacemakers' biggest hits. Even at their cheekiest and most provocative—“How Do You Do It?” and “I Like It”—they perform early-‘60s beat-group pop with the unabashed glee of winking young scamps, while “A Shot of Rhythm and Blues” has the sweaty fug of a night at the Cavern. Showstopping ballads “You'll Never Walk Alone” and “Ferry Across the Mersey” have a heroic, aspirational quality, which comes largely from the openhearted sincerity of Gerry Marsden's voice.
