Fuzzed-out, minor-key guitars give this 2010 record its shadowy edge; as always, Ant’s bespoke boom bap is the springboard that makes Slug’s bleakly diaristic observations soar. “The Best Day” is a sober carpe-diem declaration for working stiffs; “The Loser Wins” is a searing kiss-off to an ex-friend. But as dark as the duo can get, they’re not afraid to let a little light in: “To All My Friends” is a loving act of gratitude to hip-hop itself, with Slug thrilled just to spit bars for a living.
