Stéphane Grappelli Essentials

Alongside Romani guitarist Django Reinhardt in the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, French violinist Stéphane Grappelli proved that Americans weren't the only jazz masters. The duo's 1937 signature tune "Minor Swing" shows Grappelli's light, classically trained touch contrasting markedly with Reinhardt's sharper attack. Melody was king for Grappelli, who dances deftly among the flora in "Honeysuckle Rose." He continued to perform Reinhardt's music, like the touching rendition of "Nuages" heard here, long after the pioneering pair parted.
