That Flag Won't Get You into Heaven: My Lai, Rachel Corrie & Iraq War Anniversaries + Gas for Israel (G&R 281)

In our latest, we talk about the American empire and it's dissenters. We get into the anniversaries of the My Lai massacre, the murder of activist Rachel Corrie in Gaza, the Vietnam era self-immolation of Alice Herz and the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

We also talk about who's (literally) fueling the Israeli war machine.

"Fighting Times"... Radical Labor Organizing in the 1970s w/ Jonathan Melrod (G&R 280)

"Fighting Times"... Radical Labor Organizing in the 1970s w/ Jonathan Melrod (G&R 280)

We had a great conversation with longtime labor organizer and activist Jonathan Melrod where we discussed his life in activism, with a particular emphasis on labor organizing during the 70s and 80s, when deindustrialization began to shatter American jobs.

Jonathan Melrod is a name synonymous with political activism, labor organization, and human rights advocacy. With his remarkable journey as a survivor of pancreatic cancer, he has defied odds and emerged as a beacon of resilience in the fight for justice.

In his compelling book, "Fighting Times," Jonathan chronicles his groundbreaking contributions to a myriad of social movements, including the iconic student movement of the 1960s, the historic civil rights movement, the trailblazing black liberation movement, the empowering women's liberation movement, the urgent call for police reform, and the transformative labor reform movement.

Drawing from his personal experiences and tireless efforts, Jonathan offers unparalleled insights into the challenges, triumphs, and untold stories of those who dedicated their lives to the Labor Movement. His words resonate with the spirit of change, emphasizing the significance of collective action and empowering workers to demand their rights.

How the FBI Began Its Long Campaign Against the Anti-Pipeline Movement w/ Journalist Adam Federman (G&R 279)

How the FBI Began Its Long Campaign Against the Anti-Pipeline Movement w/ Journalist Adam Federman (G&R 279)

Newly obtained documents reveal that the U.S. government was monitoring environmental activists opposed to the Keystone XL pipeline far earlier than previously known. Young, Native activists were among the government’s first targets. The FBI file describes Native American groups as a potentially dangerous threat and likens them to “environmental extremists” whose actions could lead to violence. The records also reveal for the first time that the State Department was involved in monitoring activists, beginning in late 2013.

From the Wobblies to the Black Panthers, this is an all too familiar pattern of the federal government surveilling and spying on anyone that deviates too much from business as usual.

In the latest episode, Scott talks with journalist Adam Federman (@adamfederman) about his latest article exposing the U.S. government's spying on the anti-pipeline movement much earlier than thought.

    Bio//
Adam Federman is a reporting fellow with Type Investigations who has written widely on environmental policy, public lands, and corporate and police spying on environmental activists. The recipient of a 2020 Fetisov Award for his environmental reporting, he has written for Politico Magazine, The Washington Post, Wired, Slate, The Nation, and other publications. His first book, Fasting and Feasting: The Life of Visionary Food Writer Patience Gray, was a New York Times notable book of 2017 and a finalist for the LA Times Book prize in biography.

Liberals Celebrate International Women’s Day By Bombing Gaza (G&R 278)

In our latest Scrappy Sunday, we talk about the State of Disunion that liberals have wrought on the rest of us. We talk about International Women’s Day being celebrated while Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton bomb and exploit their way to power. Scott talks about anti-war direct actions in his hometown of Garland, TX and how Sen. Tom Cotten is calling for investigations of “left extremism” in the military after Aaron Bushnell’s death.

All this and this week in radical history (which celebrates radical women such as Judy Bari, Berta Cáceres and Lucy Parsons).

    "Chomsky and Me: A Memoir" . . . Bev Stohl's quarter-century as Chomsky's administrative aide (G&R 277)

    "Chomsky and Me: A Memoir" . . . Bev Stohl's quarter-century as Chomsky's administrative aide (G&R 277)

For over 25 years Bev Stohl was the administrative aide to Noam Chomsky at MIT. But she was so much more than that . . . not only did she manage his office, but become a close personal friend. She recently wrote a memoir of her time with him at MIT and we had a fantastic and poignant conversation about what Noam is like in "real life," when he's not writing and speaking about world events.

We found out that Noam thinks scotch provides him protein. That he loves pets. That after Ali G. got in for an interview he told her "no more gold suits." We discussed how Noam eats egg (singular on purpose). Bev talked about her travels with Noam, including to the Vatican, his long friendship with Howard Zinn, the various people she met who came in to talk with him (including Zack de la Rocha and Tom Morello), how he warmed up to kids and pets, and so much more.

It's a rare insight into the personal life of the world's most famous dissident provided by the person was was close to him every day for over a quarter-century.

    Don't Dismiss Aaron Bushnell's Act of Resistance w/ Anti-War Veteran Graham Clumpner (G&R 276)

    Don't Dismiss Aaron Bushnell's Act of Resistance w/ Anti-War Veteran Graham Clumpner (G&R 276)

Last Sunday, February 25, 2024, Aaron Bushnell killed himself by setting himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington DC. He did this as an act of resistance to the ongoing genocide in Gaza by the IDF. He was just 25 years old. He was an active duty member of the US Air Force. He live streamed as walked to the embassy and said: “I will no longer be complicit in genocide.I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest, but compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.”
His final words, shouted several times as the flames consumed him, were “Free Palestine! Free Palestine!”

In our latest, we discuss the self-immolation of Aaron Bushnell. We're joined by our comrade and anti-war veteran Graham Clumpner (@turncoatveteran) to discuss Aaron's act of resistance, anti-war/anti-imperialist sentiment in the military and why the Left continues to fail at connecting with veterans of America's foreign wars.

    Bio//
Graham Clumpner is an anti-war U.S. military veteran of the war in Afghanistan, anarchist, environmentalist and direct action organizer.
