Macbook pro 2018 keeps dropping bluetooth

My shiny new Macbook pro 2018 keeps dropping the bluetooth connect to Bose soundwave. Nothing works, including the bluetooth debug, which works for maybe a day. This is not a bose issue! It worked perfectly with my old Mac. This and Word crashing is making me feel like the new Macbook pro is a lemon.

Why do I have difficulty with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth devices when USB 3 devices are attached to my computer?

Some USB 3 devices can generate radio frequency interference that can cause Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices operating in the 2.4GHz band to have issues communicating with your computer. Here are some tips to avoid this issue:

  • If your USB device has a cable long enough that you can move the device, place it away from your Mac—and make sure not to place it behind your Mac, or near the hinge of its display. The antennas for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are located there, and USB 3 devices placed there might interfere with your wireless connections.
  • If you're using adapters or dongles on a Mac computer with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, plug them into the front port on the left side of your Mac, or into the ports on the right side (if your computer has them). These ports are the farthest away from the antennas, making interference less likely.
  • To avoid interference on the 2.4GHz band using Wi-Fi, try using the 5GHz band instead. You can change this on your wireless base station. Bluetooth always uses 2.4GHz, so this alternative isn't available for Bluetooth.

One thing that may be adding to the interference in the 2.4GHz band is ...

... your Router.

Despite your Mac being able to use the 5GHz band, and use up to three antennas, your Router seems to be stuck using channel 11 in the 2.4GHz band, despite you having good signal strength. It is using only two antennas (which may be all it has) and has backed off from the potential maximum transmit rate of 130M bits/sec, probably due to interference.

Do you have an Ethernet connection between your main Router and this Extender? If not, you are producing double traffic when you send or receive anything. The Routers use up bandwidth talking to each other, then talking to your Mac.

Ideally, you would like to connect them to each other with Ethernet cables. this keeps the Router-to-Router traffic off the (crowded) airwaves:

Hello Everyone,

I have been having a similar problem not with a bluetooth speaker but with my apple wireless keyboard and my logitech MX master mouse. I've been trying to figure out why my keyboard keeps discounting and reconnecting. Sometimes dozens of times in a matter of minutes. Also why my mouse is so jumping and glitchy I can barely use it. Both of the devices are connected bluetooth and the only other thing that's connect is a 32 LG 4k monitor and power. Monitor is connected through display port to USB-C cable. I've been trying to rule out the monitor as the problem because I don't have a problem when it's disconnected however I don't use the keyboard and mouse for every long because I usually on the go if the monitor is not connected. After reading this entire post I did notice that my MBP is connecting to my 2.4GHz band instead of my 5G so I'm going to watch this closer and see if this is my problem. Thanks in advance.

if you change the Router setup so that your 2.4GHZ band and 5GHz band have different names, you can selectively connect to the band you wish.

The take-away is, be sure your LG display is far enough away from your Router, or it can mess up 2.4GHz band from the Router for all users.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not using the LG display ultrafine 5k display from apple. I'm using a LG 32 4k its a newer model that was just released a few months ago, so I doubt the LG recall would apply to this model. At least I can't find anything related to my model.

So far switching my MBP to 5g channel has helped fix the problem. The only reason my MBP was on the 2.4GHz channel was because my routers 5g channel was never turned on until recently. My MBP was connecting to the 2.4GHz channel by default because that's what I was using for years until I took the time to figure out that my router had a 5g channel. I've since then deleted the 2.4GHz channel within my system preferences so now it connects to 5g by default. Both channel have unique names so I can tell the differences.

Thanks Shaun

Yes I have separate names for the 2.4GHz and 5G channels. Up to this point the problem hasn't come back. I deleted the entire 2.4GHz channel from my network preferences. I was still having a problem with my MBP connecting to my 2.4GHz channel before I completely deleted it. Since I deleted it my bluetooth keyboard and airpods haven't given me a problem. Fingers crossed. I'm not sure if I mentioned or not that the problem I was having start when I got a new LG 4k monitor. I had the MBP since late July and never had the problem. In my case it had something to do with my 2.4GHz channel to my MBP and this new monitor.
