The Modern Day Goalkeeper: Innovating to High-Perform

The Modern Day Goalkeeper: Innovating to High-Perform

In this episode, I am joined by Lee Robinson; one of three brothers who founded ‘The Modern Day Goalkeeper’. Lee has had an incredible career, representing several professional clubs in Scotland including Rangers, Queen of the South and Dunfermline Athletic. After calling time on his career in 2019, he had amassed over 200 professional appearances. However, it was his experiences in the game that motivated him to change the way goalkeeping is viewed and trained in the footballing world. As a result, he and his two brothers started posting clips of them training on Instagram and twitter; new and innovative drills which completely challenged the way goalkeepers have traditional trained over the years. Now, they have one of the largest social media followings in the goalkeeping communities and are evolving everything from training methods, to the technology in the gloves we use.
    We discuss:
    ·      Experiences at Rangers and how the pressure of playing impacted performance ·      Self-doubt, anxiety, fear and how it impacts performance ·      Reflecting on training methods and the importance of creating realism ·      The power of positive thinking and manifesting the things you want out of your matches ·      The importance of effective coaching and the role of the coach in the goalkeeper-coach relationship ·      The importance of sacrifice and understanding that time is a commodity Lee provides such great insight in this episode and challenges existing norms around what we believe to be ‘the correct way’ of viewing goalkeeping.

Conor O'Keefe: The Journey & The Mountain

Conor O'Keefe: The Journey & The Mountain

In this episode I'm joined by Macclesfield Town goalkeeper Conor O'Keefe. Conor's journey to the professional game has been far from orthodox. Having previously been released by the silkmen after a one year pro deal, Conor pursued his academic qualifcations at Loughborough University which is one of the worlds best academic institutions for high-performance sport. Following the completion of hsi degree and the set-up of his youtube page, he moved to Madrid as part of a year abroad studying. A season of professional football in Spain gave him the taste of football abroad and led him to move to Sweeden, completing two seasons in Scandanavia before returning home to Macclesfield.

Conor's journey is nothing short of remarkable and acts as a reminder that having a career in the game is possible for anyone; it just depends how badly you want it.

In this episode, I'm joined by Stockport County FC goalkeeper Ethan Ross who is currently on loan at National League side York City FC. James Bransgrove: There's More to Life than Football

James Bransgrove: There's More to Life than Football

In this episode, I'm joined by non-league and former professional goalkeeper James Bransgrove. James was a young pro at Colchester United who took the brave decision to walk away from the professional game in pursuit of a career in finance and accounting. We discuss the importance of having a 'Plan B' and being proactive when it comes to planning your future as a young player. This episode is incredibly important for everyone involved in the game, as it highlights the benefits of forward thinking and planning for transition away from the game. There are countless examples of individuals who have not planned for life after football, which from time-to-time can result in adverse effects on Mental Health and Wellbeing. James exemplifies that when young players take the time to plan for their future, transitioning away from the game can be significantly easier and gives you a sense of purpose to achieve your goals moving forwards.

James Belshaw: How to Win in a Game of Opinions

James Belshaw: How to Win in a Game of Opinions

In this Episode I’m re-joined on the podcast by Bristol Rovers promotion winning goalkeeper James Belshaw. Belly has had an incredible year, being let go by Harrogate Town at the bottom of League 2, to winning promotion to League 1 in the course of a season. Belly’s journey highlights exactly why football is a game of opinions, and why an individual’s judgement of you is never final unless you choose to believe it. We reflect on how to deal with adversity, and how to use the mind to deal with opinions and drive performance. We discuss:   Bristol Rovers crazy 7-0 win over Scunthorpe United to gain promotion Joey Barton and dressing room culture How to bed yourself into a team as a new goalkeeper Having his squad number changed from 1 to 21 and then being let go by Harrogate with no rationale or explanation Understanding what drives performance: revenge or determination Becoming a fan favourite and building relationships The importance of family and support networks on the career journey Plans for the future after football Q & A Football is one of the most cut-throat industries in the world with less than 0.01% of players currently in the system going on to have a career in the game. This episode is perfect to inspire goalkeepers everywhere on how to respond to adversity and how to deal with opinions that may not sit in your favour. An incredibly important episode delivered by a goalkeeper who has seen it all from the conference to the EFL.   To keep up-to-date with Belly, you can follow him on:

Scott Loach: Converting Weaknesses into Superpowers

Scott Loach: Converting Weaknesses into Superpowers

In this Episode I’m re-joined on the podcast by Chesterfield goalkeeper Scott Loach. Loachy moved to Chesterfield at the beginning of the 2021/22 season after being put on furlough by Barnet towards the end of the Pandemic. Since leaving, he has arguably had one of the most eventful years in his career as a goalkeeper; being called up to the England C squad and facing Chelsea at Stanford Bridge. We reflect on the past year and uncover the secrets to converting weaknesses into superpowers. We discuss: The mental battles of being away from football for prolonged periods of time Compartmentalising life on and off the pitch and giving full commitment How to overcome the fear of failure and mistakes The importance of building working relationships in the world of football How train your mindset through learning from your past experiences How to approach playing against the European Champions The differences between premier league and national league goalkeepers Flat whites and biscuits Advice to young goalkeepers about the steps they need to take to forge a successful career in the game The benefits of senior football vs playing U23s for development Mindset books to help you become a high-performer. This episode is packed full of knowledge and advice for keepers looking to progress and advance in the game. Loachy has so much experience to share and I can honestly say that some of the advice in this episode is second to none.

Perfect for keepers!

Fully recommend this podcast. Listened to the first episode the night before my last game before lockdown. Going into the game I felt so much more comfortable on how to deal with certain events on the pitch. Been an avid listener ever since. Will definitely help keepers improve the mental side of the game. Unreal podcast 🙌
