Now Look

Now Look

Ron Wood’s sophomore album reunites the band from I’ve Got My Own Album To Do (bassist Willie Weeks, drummer Andy Newmark, and good ol’ Keith Richards), and also invites several other luminaries to the party, including Stones guitarist Mick Taylor, Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan (from the Faces), and distinguished soul man Bobby Womack. Thanks to Womack’s presence, Now Look is more R&B-oriented than its predecessor. “If You Don’t Want My Love” is pure smooth soul, while reggae stylings illuminate “Carribean Boogie.” “I Got Lost When I Found You” could be an old Muscle Shoals outtake, but the album’s centerpiece is a cover of Ann Peebles’ Memphis soul classic “I Can’t Stand the Rain.” As is usually the case with anything involving Ron Wood, Now Look comes off as gloriously tossed-together and unselfconscious. The album is better for the fact that Wood lets it all hang out, and in retrospect, Now Look documents one of the great open-ended jam sessions of ‘70s rock ‘n’ roll.
