Juniper

Juniper

After two releases featuring the deep-toned vocals of Dionne Bennett, the Cardiff-based Slowly Rolling Camera offer their first all-instrumental program, Juniper. The majestic trance-jazz sound and shifting, propulsive beats are still in effect thanks to the principals Deri Roberts (electronics), Dave Stapleton (keyboards), and Elliot Bennett (drums), though an expanded cast makes for added tonal color and expression. Bassist Aidan Thorne and guitarist Stuart McCallum join in, as they did on the group’s eponymous 2014 debut. But unlike that album's string ensemble, Juniper relies on multiple horns, whether for emphatic riffs, richly voiced harmony, or incisive soloing. As kinetic as “Hyperloop” and inwardly contemplative as “A Thousand Lights” or “Nature’s Ratio,” the music shows genuine breadth.
