Party & Pain

Brooklyn veteran Maino has succeeded by finding his lane and staying firmly in it. Party & Pain is a classic New York album: The beats are filled with boom-bap drums and the rapping is hard, like on “Let Me Be Great,” an ode to survival with an Auto-Tuned chorus, and the paranoid, half-sung title track. Maino also shows inventiveness as a storyteller on “Ghost of Kalief Browder,” a story told from the perspective of the tragically deceased prison-system victim.
