Bootstraps

Bootstraps

The eponymous 2012 debut album by the Portland indie trio Bootstraps happened by request. After hearing some of Jordan Beckett’s tunes, actor and director Sam Jaeger asked him to write and record songs for Jaeger’s film Take Me Home. Road Noise opens with a bewitching melancholy, beautified by Beckett’s feathered croon and swirling guitars enveloped in gossamer dream-pop effects reminiscent of Explosions in the Sky. “Sleeping Giant” is equally fetching, if not more so. Beckett sings lilting inflections throughout the song, layering his vocal harmonies and adding depth to his demure tenor. Where countless bands do well to approximate the sunnier side of the Golden State when musing on California, Bootstraps take the road less traveled with “Oh CA,” a gauzy composition that pulses through a foggy haze of ambience with swelling sets of rhythms that pump like the coastal waves. “Nothing on You Kid” is a more intimate song that shuffles along with wire brushes on a snare drum and acoustic guitars that resonate with the natural reverb of a wide-open room. “Revel” closes with sparse elegance.
