C.J. is a drifter who’s lived on the edge since a terrible disaster shattered his life when he was a kid. In the winter of 2018, he lands in New Orleans and gets a job on the docks. A few weeks later he meets a mysterious Russian girl at a bar in the French Quarter. She tells him her name, Adrianna, but not where she came from or how she got there. But it doesn’t matter. He’s instantly smitten. She’s all alone and has nowhere to go, so he brings her home with him. She lives with C.J. for a year. Then, suddenly, she leaves him for the high life with Richard Traplan, an ambitious businessman in league with corrupt politicians and a sinister oligarch—men who live outside the rules of law.

Now it’s January 2020, and the world is about to plunge into chaos. The wheels of Richard’s grand scheme are grinding towards completion, and Adrianna is trapped in his vicious web. Betrayal, threats, and several brutal homicides pit C.J. and Adrianna against each other—and in fear of being murdered themselves. Time is fast running out, and C.J. is forced to make a chilling decision that will change his life forever. Can his dangerous and desperate action save them from the ruthless grip of power and malignant wealth…

    Fade to Midnight

The authors have created a unique multi-media, collaborative novel which grabs you with its fast-paced storyline and attention to pungent NOLA details; from the down home cooking to second line street dancing, the music and joy in life ooze from this novel novel. Most chapters begin with brief dramatic scenes which continue the narrative, while incorporating written phrases and graphic overlays. The renderings are enriched with painterly skill and still photos flesh out the scenes further. Though these techniques advance the plot and make negotiating the read a lot of fun, the lush, poetic language coupled with salty Creole idiom stand alone quite well. Subtle social commentary integrates nicely and I found myself engrossed, reading/viewing in a single session punctuated only by lunch (red beans and rice!).

Wow! A film noir thriller based in the seamy side of one of my favorite places, New Orleans Louisiana (NOLA). Love the images and NOLA locales, even the eerie music. So easy to get hooked, you won’t be able to put it down wondering what will happen next. Recommend this for anyone who loves film noir and/or NOLA.
