U & Me

U & Me

It was the soaring sound of uplifting trance that first gave Austin, Texas’ Tritonal their wings. But after their 2011 debut album Piercing the Quiet, the duo altered course: 2016’s Painting With Dreams shed the driving rhythms and ethereal melodies in favor of sumptuous future-house textures—and the occasional nod to straight-up pop. U & Me continues in that direction: Tempos are tempered by the recent influence of tropical house, and guest singers’ voices are pushed pleasingly front and center. They haven’t left the main stage behind—peak-time tracks like “Leaving Here Alone” and “Love U Right” are built to scale up—but by and large, this is the most deeply in touch with their feelings that Tritonal have ever gotten. It’s a good look: Highlights like “When I’m With U” and “Out My Mind” have the kind of emotional resonance that transcends dance music’s shifting winds.
