Midnight Melodies (feat. Curtis Lundy & Victor Lewis)

Something of a throwback, Cyrus Chestnut’s gospel- and blues-based brand of bebop recalls such classic players as Red Garland and Tommy Flanagan. Here with bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Victor Lewis, the trio tackle material from a variety of sources. The underappreciated John Hicks (who passed in 2006) is celebrated on three of his tunes, with the expansive “Naima’s Love Song” standing out. Billy Strayhorn is surveyed back to back with the romantic “Chelsea Bridge” (highlighted by Chestnut’s whimsical playing) and “U.M.M.G.,” which builds a wonderful momentum thanks in part to Lundy’s robust playing. Long a measuring stick for saxophonists, “Giant Steps” finds the pianist also up to the challenge with his most adventurous soloing of the album. The original “Hey, It’s Me You’re Talking To” comes from Lewis (who opens the song with a solo) and the pianist contributes “To Be Determined.” Chestnut has a catalog as leader going back to 1992, so it’s hard to believe this is his first live album; nonetheless, this set from 2013 at Smoke in New York City was worth the wait.
