Root of Evil: The True Story of the Hodel Family and the Black Dahlia
When Elizabeth Short, also known as The Black Dahlia, was brutally killed in 1947, it gripped the entire country. More than 70 years later, it remains America's most infamous unsolved murder. Many believe Dr. George Hodel was the killer, thanks to an investigation by Hodel's own son. But murder is just part of the Hodel family story, one filled with horrifying secrets that ripple across generations. Now, through never-before-heard archival audio and first-time interviews, the Hodel family opens up to reveal their shocking story. In this eight-part documentary series, sisters Rasha Pecoraro and Yvette Gentile, the great grand daughters of George Hodel, take a deep dive into their family history to try to figure out what really happened, and where do they all go from here? Root of Evil is the companion podcast to TNTs limited series I Am the Night. Inspired by the true story of the Hodel family, the series stars Chris Pine and comes from acclaimed Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins.

Absolutely raw and heartbreaking, but beautiful.

I was directed to this podcast through So Supernatural, and while I knew it would be intense I was not prepared for the raw gut-wrenching accounts, the real life recordings of mother and daughter telling things in their own words, and the strength of those who remain here today. Wishing this family all the best, and thanking them for sharing this story and the family perspective of everything with the world.

While I’m sure some of this is true there’s a lot of leaps being made and you have to take a lot on people’s word. Also if you do research into the family it brings up more doubt. Exactly the reason I avoid these ‘my family’ true crime podcasts. They all seem very scammy.
Fictional take on B.D. but Entertaining

As interesting as this take on the Black Dahlia murder sounds, more reliable experts in the fields of violent crime, L.A. post-war history, and behavioral profiling have widely panned Steve Hodel’s books as a piece of fantasy. The sad reality of this horrifying crime is that the victim Elizabeth Short is treated like a footnote or supporting character, when the focus should be all about who she was and how she lived her life. For a brief overview of the characteristics, experiences, history, and behaviors of the victim Elizabeth Short, I recommend “Crimes of the Times” from LA Times Studios.
Absolutely Incredible

I first listened to this podcast a couple years ago and just re-listened. It is unbelievable what this family endured and overcame. So proud of each of you for ending the cycle of abuse and horror. Hope you are all doing well. Would love to hear an update on you all. Take care!!

You’re not the victim in this story. You’re just capitalizing on the narrative.
Decent but gets off track

Gets too much into the modern day family. It also takes a lot of people at their word without much verification.
best series ever 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I was always fascinated by the Black Dahlia murder, as well as all thing dark / Hollyweird. when I heard one of my favorite podcasts was covering this case, but only for members, I just happened to stumble upon this and wow.. I am so glad I did. I know there is only so much to tell and I am immediately ordering the books from Amazon, but I just loved everything about this. the production, back ground noise, the way the episodes were layer and left cliffhangers — it was all beautifully done and in my opinion, is a great gift to the Short family, whomever may still be alive today.
Best series ever

I’ve always been fascinated with the black dahlia murder and why it hasn’t been solved. But now I know exactly what happened. This podcast is one of the best series I’ve ever listened to. The fact that the hosts themselves are closely related to Hodel, and the fact that they have the most INSANE family history I’ve ever heard.
Loved
