Devil's Tale (Bonus Track Version)

Devil's Tale (Bonus Track Version)

Another musical installment of “two great flavors that go great together,” Devil’s Tale pairs respected Canadian guitarist Adrian Raso with the Balkan brass band Fanfare Ciocarlia. Even though Fanfare are known for their explosive live sets, Rosa holds his own, playing many of the leads in a taut Gypsy swing style. He also writes the songs, bringing in such unlikely sounds as banjo, spaghetti western guitar, and country slide. Props also go to Fanfare for stepping outside their usual role to play some different melodies and rhythms and generally acting more as a backing band—this is particularly notable on “Bireli’s Waltz” and “The Absinthe-Minded Gypsy,” where Raso solos expansively. Those wanting something looking to the Old World should check out the insistent “Django” and the French café–inspired “Charlatan’s Waltz.” Those wanting the New World can get a taste of New Orleans and points west on “Urn St. Tavern” and the title cut. Considering the seamlessness of the concept here, one wonders why similar matchups don't happen more often.
