UK Psychology
A complete and easy enough listen. It’s a … what? … near future SciFi influencer sports conspiracy mystery story? All that adds up to the recognizable “genre” of well-funded audio drama from England — they mostly all sound similar and they all seem to contain large and small bits and pieces of each other. It’s predictably well cast and well acted, as expected, but here some of the acting is a little stagey for this format, with somewhat awkward dialog pacing, and maybe even different sounding recording spaces. I didn’t use headphones, but some of the volume changes didn’t even feel comfortable over speakers. One of the things to set this apart was shifts in the timeline and audience perspective that felt a little slippery — it helped avoid narration and exposition, and meshed with the themes of memory and trending social media events, but was abrupt and got a little dizzy — a more obvious transition cue would have been helpful. And about memory and minds, there was more than enough of the psychology stuff that always goes a bit sideways in English shows — a gross thing where it seems as if mental health only exists to be an extreme plot device — it’s handled here better than it sometimes is, but it’s such a specific vibe to UK shows it puts me on edge.
