Lunar New Year But Make It 2021

Lunar New Year But Make It 2021

    Surprised?

We're dropping in your feed a bit earlier this week because we wanted to celebrate Lunar New Year with you guys

This week we're talking about how Lunar New Year has become more important as we get older - especially if you're a child of immigrants and don't have many family near you.

We understand that for many people, Lunar New Year will be a bit different. Just hours before we started recording, our city Victoria in Australia went into a 5 day lockdown so
we're also spending it a bit different.

In this episode, we talk about New Year superstitions and how some of them sound a bit unrealistic. We also discuss how even though we may not necessarily believe in many of them, we have kind of followed them by default because it has been drilled into us since we were young by our parents.

We also discuss whether as millennials living in Western countries, if we will be continuing these traditions.

This week for recommendation time, we are recommending you to get behind the #AsiansAreHuman & #TheyCantBurnUsAll movement to rise awareness about the increased hate crimes against Asians everywhere around the world.

    Kung Fu Vagina

    Kung Fu Vagina

    Another month, another cultural appropriation!

This week we are switching things up. You might notice the show sounds a bit different and that's because we'll only be focusing on one topic per week to give us more time to really dig deeper into the topics we cover. Also, we're both expecting really a busy year for us personally so we wanted to make it manageable for ourselves.

BUT let's talk about the problematic sex and relationship coach Kim Anami's music video called 'Kung Fu Vagina'. Anami landed in hot waters last week after she culturally appropriated Asian culture to sell and promote her online courses.

There's a few problematic things about the video
    - It samples Carl Douglas' catchy but problematic 70's song ' Kung Fu Fighting' which has the oriental riff
    - The music video fetishizes Asian women
    - Anami wears chopsticks in her hair
    - Mismatch Chinese & Japanese culture: although the intention to appropriate Chinese culture, she wears a Kimino...
    - It uses the WONTON FONT, which further perpetuates what Westerners think Chinese characters look like

Since recording, we have learnt that she's been deleting comments about those pointing out the cultural appropriation and Twitter users have found that she's publicly liked anti-BLM tweets. Do we see a pattern here?

This week, Phil recommends watching the Korean drama 'True Beauty' which is available on Viki.

    White Monkey Jobs

    White Monkey Jobs

    HELLO JUICY LEMONERS!

    SEGMENT 1: White Monkey Jobs
    - The term ‘White Monkey job’ refers to racially motivated job offers. They usually offer vast sums of money for unusual work. The employment is peculiar because the only requirement is your foreign face. You don’t have to be exclusively Caucasian.
    - Is white monkey jobs problematic?
    - Why do Asian culture put Caucasian people on such a high pedestal?

    SEGMENT 2: Sleep Revenge
    - Journalist Daphne K Lee describes the phenomenon as when “people who don’t have much control over their daytime life refuse to sleep early in order to regain some sense of freedom during late-night hours”
    - Why is sleep revenge particularly affecting younger people?

    SEGMENT 3: Recommendations
    - This week we are recommending you to do ask yourself these 3 questions and then tune into the show to see what they reveal about your personality.

    Bling Empire

    Bling Empire

WELCOME TO THE FIRST EPISODE OF 2021!

You can follow Phil on TikTok here - @misterchinese

SEGMENT 1: Bling Empire got us feely uncomfortable
    - Why has Netflix's new reality show about rich Asians have us feeling a bit uncomfortable?

    SEGMENT 2: The Mahjong Line
    - How did three white American ladies outrage the whole Asian Internet with their revamp version of Mahjong? Is this cultural appropriation?
    - We also discuss about how LV's $80,000 Mahjong doesn't bring us outrage.

    SEGMENT 3: Recommendations
    - This week we are recommending you to watch Alice in Borderland on Netflix

Hello Juicy Lemoners! This is our last episode of the year and then we'll be going on a little break over the Christmas holidays :)

SEGMENT 1: The Influencer who Refuses to apologise over racial slurs and culture appropriation
    - A Caucasian influencer (who is allegedly French) who is currently studying in Singapore sparked outrage last week over her Instagram photos where she wore the Chinese traditional QiPao and posed with slanted eyes and wrote the caption that included 'ching chong'.
    - She has refused to apologise despite thousands of people telling her it was racially insensitive

    SEGMENT 2: Goal-base vs Life-based Life Approach
    - A viral TikTok trend which people are sharing their lessons learnt from their psychologists is going viral
    - One particular video is about comparing a goal-based and life-based life
    - What is the difference and how can it change your life?

    SEGMENT 3: Recommendations
    - This week we are recommending you to watch Korean movie The Call on Netflix.
