Kaie Bird - Sharing Tables - Creating Community through love of coffee

Kaie Bird - Sharing Tables - Creating Community through love of coffee

Kaie created Sharing Tables to be 'excuse' to bring people who normally wouldn't come together, at the same 'table' and creating community or friendships. Within the coffee industry here, before she began her events back in end of 2015-start of 2016, people working at the various cafes didn't mingle. It wasn't a thing that happened. They were "the enemy". Through all of the events in the past 5 years though, she has been able to great a solid foundation and community where people come together and share their ideas, knowledge, skills, and are friends.  These cafe owners now talk and share with one another, to a degree, and there is a real sense of a community. This wasn't a thing before my events with Sharing Tables. Sharing Tables was needed to bridge the community together, past their history and perceived differences.
Specialty coffee has taken giant leaps here locally in past few years and while the cafes are mostly still seeing the scene with dollar signs in their eyes, Kaie sees heart. She wants there to be some heart and does her best to keep building up the strong foundation she has through events like barista jams, cuppings, education, and other community coffee events.

Judy Bogen - Place2Heal - Creating a healing space that encourages wellness over illness

Judy Bogen - Place2Heal - Creating a healing space that encourages wellness over illness

Judy Bogen made Aliyah to Israel from England and settled in Israel, raised three children and enjoyed a career including marketing, human resources and office management and
administration. In 2008, she and her family went on shlichut to the United States, where she was diagnosed with stage 1/ grade 3 breast cancer. She underwent surgeries and treatments till the summer of 2009.

When she returned to Israel in 2011, she continued her follow up. The health care she receives here is excellent and the staff, very professional. However, the outpatient centers are not comfortable and healing spaces. They do not give the patient the stress-free environment necessary when living through cancer treatment. And, so she took on a different kind of Shlichut. After studying the connection between one emotional and mental state and physical conditions, she established Place2Heal in 2016.

It is a nonprofit organization which focuses on raising funds for renovating and redesigning Cancer Day Care Units in Israeli hospitals. 'I wanted to bring about a change in cancer day care units, to help oncology patients in Israel” she explains.'The professional treatment in Israel is excellent, but the physical environment leaves more to be desired.'

Chaya Lev - Dancing out the hate and finding the joy

Chaya Lev - Dancing out the hate and finding the joy

Chaya Lev moved to Israel 4 years ago after surviving breast cancer at just forty years old.  She had booked an appointment with her doctor for a "routine" breast examination. At that time, everything in my life felt routine.  She was over-weight and over-stressed and was living in the shadow of happiness.  She received a wake up call that forever changed her life.

Now every day of her life is an adventure. Ordering coffee and speaking to interesting people is an adventure.  Going to the post office and finding new doctors (most of the time in my new language), is an adventure. Chaya is thriving and teaching dance here in Israel and has added activist to the long list of things she is doing to help others.
