Mary Queen of Scots returned to Scotland to rule as queen aged eighteen in a royal fleet, and left only seven years later, exhausted and terrified, in a small fishing boat.

Mary had tried to rule Scotland during one of the most turbulent times in Scotland's history. Scotland was a land of warlords and had just gone through the Protestant Reformation. But Mary was Catholic, and Scotland was now officially Protestant.

Mary’s personal life was turbulent too.  She was married three times by the age of twenty-four. Her first marriage was probably unconsummated and was to the King of France.  Her second marriage was to her cousin Lord Darnley, a licentious, arrogant, dim-witted drunkard. Mary may have been complicit in murdering him. Her third marriage was to a clan warlord who had been involved in murdering her second husband.
