Coco Pops, mums army and a tennis legacy - Judy Murray spills the beans

Hi, welcome the sixth episode of Scots Spill the Beans.

I’m Kim McAllister, this is the last in the series and what a finale I have for you! If you were listening last week to my chat with golfer Paul Lawrie you’ll have heard me tease you that I had a big surprise in store. Well, I deliver on my promises – today’s guest is Judy Murray.

I have admired this woman for about a decade, so it was a real treat to chat to her. Isn’t it wonderful when your heroes exceed your expectations? Now Judy is an extremely busy lady so I had to do this interview over the phone. But even though the sound quality isn’t quite as sharp as you’re used to on this podcast – I think you’ll cope just fine.

Jumbo sausage, Brewdog beer and golf in Aberdeen: Paul Lawrie spills the beans

Jumbo sausage, Brewdog beer and golf in Aberdeen: Paul Lawrie spills the beans

Hi, welcome to episode 5 of Scots Spill The Beans.

I’m Kim McAllister and I went back to my second home Aberdeen for this week’s episode and hung out with local hero Paul Lawrie.

Paul is the last Scottish golfer to have won a major – The Open in 1999 - he’s been in the Ryder Cup team twice and he runs the hugely popular Paul Lawrie Golf Centre.

I think I’ve also figured out why they call him Chippie…

Paul spills the beans on Aberdeen, the north east of Scotland, golf psychology, teaching children to play golf and his one regret

    He mentions:

    The Marcliffe Hotel

    Skibo Castle

    Muirfield Golf Club

    Turnberry

Bredog the beer and the pubs

    Belhaven Beer

    Still Game

Kings Links and the promenade at Aberdeen beach

Aberdeen golf courses Royal Aberdeen, Murcar, Trump, Deeside

Peterculter fish and chip shop "Jumbo's"

Crying on TV, golf psychology and Scottish positivity; Gavin Hastings spills the beans

Hi, welcome to episode 4 of Scots Spill The Beans.

It’s a big one - today I’m chatting to Scottish rugby legend Gavin Hastings.

I’ve known Gav for a long time, he’s friends with my dad, who's a broadcaster, so obviously I had to ask him about that time Dad made him cry live on air…

    Gav spills the beans on:

    Scotland's 14-15 defeat by England in 1994

His son Adam Hastings following in his footsteps

The Lions Tour as captain in 1993

    His love of golf

    He also mentions:

    Gullane Golf Club

    Archerfield Colf Club

    St Andrews Old Course

    Gleneagles Hotel

    Turnberry Hotel

The Canny Man pub in Edinburgh

Accents, old school pubs and his first experience of snow; Australian Jack Derrick spills the beans

Accents, old school pubs and his first experience of snow; Australian Jack Derrick spills the beans

Hi and welcome to episode 3 of Scots Spill the Beans.

I’m Kim McAllister and today I’m asking an Australian’s opinion on Scotland.

Jack Derrick left Tasmania last summer and landed just as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival kicked off. He’s working as a physiotherapist and trying to get his head round our Scottish English – You ken fit like it is?

    (You know what it's like)

26 year old Jack travelled 11,000 miles to live and work in Scotland.

He has seen falling snow for the first time, puzzled his way through the varied Scottish accents and achieved a dream by working in professional football.

He's fascinated by the country's history and has already found some gems:

    Kyloe Restaurant, Edinburgh

Glentress Forest Mountain Biking - Scottish Borders

    The Balmoral Hotel Edinburgh

    Glenmorangie Whisky

    Irn Bru

    The Trossachs

    Calton Hill

    Arthur's Seat

    North Berwick Beach

    Loch Tay

    Bracklinn Falls, Callandar

Babies in drawers, sausages in nurses' bags and 1960s Edinburgh: Christina Thomson spills the beans

Hi and welcome to episode 2 of Scots Spill the Beans.

I am Kim McAllister and today I’ll take you back in time in Edinburgh with Christina Thomson.

If you've ever watched 'Call the Midwife' you will love Christina's stories of district nursing in 1960s Edinburgh. From the uniforms that garnered universal respect to the communities who lived in the Royal Mile tenements, Christina paints vivid pictures.

Listen for a true flavour of Scotland's capital city 50 years ago.

Outlander, David Beckham and Bollywood: Craig McGinlay spills the beans

Outlander, David Beckham and Bollywood: Craig McGinlay spills the beans

Hi and welcome to the very first episode of Scots Spill the Beans.

I'm Kim McAllister and I’m going to prove to you that Scotland is more than tartan castles and whisky glens.

Come on in – and hear the secrets from the Scots!

I’ve got some cracking people lined up for this six-part series.

No messing around – we’re starting with a star of Outlander.

Craig McGinlay was working for a Scottish Premier League football team when he went for an audition to be in a whisky ad. It turned out to be a Guy Ritchie-directed epic starring David Beckham. Was it his bushy beard that got him the part? Or his Scottish charm? I’ll let you decide...

    Show notes:

Craig references many Scottish places in this podcast:

Cumbernauld - a small 'new town' just outside Glasgow

Condorrat - a former village, now part of the 'new town' just outside Glasgow

Govan - an area in south Glasgow with a history of deprivation which has recently been regenerated

Gleneagles - a five star luxury resort in Perthshire

The Blythswood Hotel - a five star luxury hotel in the centre of Glasgow

Paisley - home of the 'Paisley pattern', a cathedral town west of Glasgow

Anstruther Chippy - multi-award-winning 'Anstruther Fish Bar and Restaurant' in Fife

Glencoe - a glen with volcanic origins in the Highlands of Scotland

Elie - a seaside town in Fife

Fort William - Highland town known as the 'gateway to Ben Nevis' which is Scotland's highest mountain

RebelRebel - barber in Finnieston, Glasgow
